Looking at a 2003 fe 501. Asking price is $2200. What should I be worried about and what should I look for. I have heard about the ignition problems and moisture. I am looking for a woods/trail thumper for rocky trails how out good is the suspension out of the box? How many watts will the stator support? Is the price fair? Thanks for your help. Drew

I have an '03 400 and it has been good to me. 200 hours with no major engine works other than a snapped kistart shaft.
I have heard that quality increased and troubles decreased by 03.
The suspension is great; top quality WP which when set up right works very well i think. Remember this is an 03 you are looking at so "out of the box" is not relevant.
I have heard about stator troubles with earlier bikes but mine has been good so far.
You don't mention how many hours on this bike and it's condition will largely be a function of the care and maintenance put in by the previous owner.
The price is hard to assess on the limited info provided.
I love my bike and it's a great package of strong motor and good handling / suspension.

The 501 is an awesome motor! A great shame they stopped producing it.

Turns out the seller is out of town untill the 22nd so I have yet to ride/ see bike. My out of the box comment was directed towards after market revalving or stock valving. Lots of variables here so this question is difficult to answer. The 501 motor is that a full pressure lube motor( oil pump)? Are the moter and clutch oil common or Berg's drew
