Hey, it's me again, Mr. broke my whole motor and spending a fortune. Did I join a club?

The last thing I've got to decide upon is the scored piston and sleeve problem. I have not yet seen the sleeve or piston, but my mech said both are damaged and in need of replacement. He said that when he thought the parts were as inexpensive and available as Japanese parts can be.

It seems that I can go with Husaberg parts for something over $650 US. That's just a money problem, other than that it seems like a good solution. But I'm cheap/limited/whipped.

Or I can apparently buy a 102mm piston from JBS for a little under $300 US plus shipping, then bore the sleeve to suit for some smaller amount of money. I'm not clear that our sleeves can be bored to this degree, or if it will need plated after boring. And, will I be introducing other problems by taking the sleeve out that extra 2mm? It also seems to me that $300 is still a chunk of money for a piston. Any less pricey options?

Or, I learned searching forums that I can buy a standard sized piston from Husa or the aftermarket and have my sleeve replated. The aftermarket I found is $185 US (Wossner?). I'm not finding much information on plating in my area. If this is feasible, however, this is my favorite solution.

I plan to street ride mostly, with maybe 4-5 track sessions a year. I'd rather have reliability over maximum power. I'm also not opposed to paying more to have a durable solution, but I'd rather not overspend on something I'll not get the benefit of in the long run.

What would you recommend I do? And specifically:

Anyone do the 102mm piston? Can the sleeve be reliably bored? Does it need plated after? And is there a less expensive, still suitable larger piston available (Wiseco, etc.)?

Can you tell me where to look to find proper sleeve restoration and plating? What, specifically, should I ask for when I find a shop? Can I expect replating to be as durable as OEM plating?

Thanks,
Dennis

someone in the US was trying a cast iron liner, neil e I think.

surely there is a deisel wet linar that you could make fit for $100 tops

yes if the ally linair is bored then it needs re plating

the yamaha raptor 700 uses a 102mm piston, not sure if it would work. you could chase up some aftermarket piston companies for the dimensions of raptor pistons.

you might be jumping the gun here though, get all the parts and check if they are useable. .

I have a 550 wreak that destroyed a mainbearing, the liner has little nicasil left, the oil ring was in 3 peices, there was a huge pile of shavings on the drainplug and the RHS main had so much play it took out the stator but the big end is fine. so at least press the big end open and see if its OK

the mech sounds like a replace everything kind of guy. nothing wrong with that, its just expensive.
