Well I just got back from my first trip to the Oregon Dunes in Florence. Though I've been riding for last 20 years or so, its always been dirt, gravel or street. This was also the first real test for my recently acquired 03 FE400e. I went with the bike bone stock, recent service done,15 hours on bike, brand new rear knobby, running full synthetic 10w40. The sand proved to be a good challenge to both man and machine. I found myself getting pretty comfortable with the feel on the second day. However, this brought out some shortcomings of my bike. First of all, it ran out of power, fast. Second, both 5th and 6th gears were useless due to not enough hp. Tighter gearing would also have helped, but more juice would have overcome that. Overheated after idling at 65 degrees for 5 mins with engine hot from a hard ride. Top steering nut vibrated off and disappeared into the sand. In summary, after this experience I'm itching to turn this bike into a mean machine. Sounds like a Lineaweaver Jet Kit is in order, as well as a rear sprocket up-size. Any other ideas?
ps- Thanks to Cerara, my riding buddy, for his sand-riding input.

#1 Idea, MORE horsepower. As you stated your 400 is a bit down on power, in the woods of BC you must love your bike. But in deep sand as you found out there is no subsitute for Displacement.
I live in a desert area that has deep sand in abundance, my 450 is as small as I woud go for this type of riding. Next H-berg will be a 550. :eek:ccasion5:

just got back from oregon as well.... i guess the best power increase would be some new jets and a pipe?? the stock pipe is so quiet and i would assume that comes at a cost of limited exhaust flow.in the sand i found my 400 would "bog out" a bit at full throttle when the engine started to power out and rpm lowered. if i cracked the thottle under major load the bike would hesitate and cough for a split second which cost me a few failed hill climbs but for the most part the bike ran great. makes me wonder what a re-jet would do. i gotta change my stock sprokets too. 6th gear is not even usable in sand or trails. when do i need to go 70m/hr????
ps- thanks to ahoolsema for all the expertise and MC wisdom!!!! Thanks Man!
