2011 fe450: Need a new fork- what are my Options?

Please help: I just bought 2011 fe 450, first dirt bike in 15 years, only have 3 rides on it. Then, I put it down in some rocks and ovalized the upper and lower on my left fork. The OEM parts are $1,800!! I can’t justify that kind of cost on 2011 bike (for just one half the fork, and without even the rebuild cost!).

I’ve had no luck finding used Husaberg fork, but there are a lot of KTM parts out there. I understand it is a WP fork... but which one? How do I know I’m getting one that will fit? I’m OK buying a used full fork and getting a rebuild... I even have a line on a fork off of a KTM 250 EXC with a few measurements, but just want to be sure it is going to fit before I buy (can’t return to sender, and shipping costs are substantial). Don’t know what year that fork is excpet that it is a WP 48mm open chamber. How do I know if it will work? What are the key dimensions? Know of any other options?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Doing some more digging it seems like this is a “WP USD 4860 MA Husaberg Enduro“?? Found that on a website somewhere... true? When I go to find a KTM replacement... which part numbers matter? Obviously the WP and 4860... the USD crucial? What does MA mean? What years of KTM ran this similar fork?

Also: I’m totally open to a ‘better’ fork if there is an upgrade I should be looking for. If I’m going to spend all this cash on my 3rd ride of the bike, sure would be nice to be thinking I’m making it even better! If it matters, I’ll mostly be riding single track, but I do enjoy getting a little bit of air under the wheels if the opportunity presents it self.

Good questions which will lead to a good discussion I believe.

I don't know what "MA" stands for. I've seen the designations MXMA, MA, MA-MP on KTM WP fork models.

I'm fairly sure that the 2009 and 2010 models had an open chamber and the 2011 and 2012 went to the pressurized closed-chamber fork. The open-chamber forks are not worse, but you don't want to mix them.

I believe a majority of parts will be interchangeable from a number of KTM models. As in the fork body itself. Perhaps even the same across the entire FE and SX line from some years plus or minus.

There will be a difference in valving between Husaberg / FE / SX / submodels etc. However, valving is replaceable (the valve shims' only purpose in the fork is to allow suspension tuning by replacing the valves). As your issue is with the outer housing you will most probably have an easier time finding replacement parts.

You will probably be able to discern some parts compatibility by finding spare part ID number of individual suspension parts and see if the dealers' search engines come up with matches across the KTM model range.

Re. upgrades: A good valve stack and a good weight of springs for your weight and riding style will be a major upgrade.

Then there also exist Öhlins internals for your forks.

I haven't come across other upgrades to the forks in these bikes. The forks are good quality but as always they benefit from valving and springs.

I'm quite sure the only difference between KTM and Husaberg Cc forks is the shim stacks. So if the internals are ok just find a KTM cc fork and then swap the tubes.

Anyone here that can confirm my beliefe?

I have the 570 and and a kato 450 exc -14, for the world I cannot tell a difference on the forks, same settings makes me smile on both.
Yeah, youre right Im not good enough rider to tell :D

Edit: looking at the part numbers it is the identical fork indeed 14187L6901.
Having both bikes in the garage most parts contra fit! KTM 450 EXC 2014 and Husaberg 570 FE that is.
Go look for the KTM 14187L6901 on your preferred sites and the shall find.

Since KTM reused the 70 degree Berg parts on their -14 bike we have a stock at hand, quite handy :)

I'm quite sure the only difference between KTM and Husaberg Cc forks is the shim stacks. So if the internals are ok just find a KTM cc fork and then swap the tubes.

The OC fork is an earlier fork fitted to the ‘09, ‘10 Bergs, the ‘11 and ‘12 Bergs had the CC’s. The OC’s will fit.

Oh I forgot to mention, the ‘10 FX had the later forks and triples being CC’s.

I found these from Christina AWD bikes: epid=27018723834&hash=item2ab291713a:g:IZIAAOSwYUlbaeHA"]https://www.ebay.com/itm/KTM-Complete-Front-Forks-48mm-WP-4CS-OEM-Front-Suspension-NEW-from-Factory/183384502586?epid=27018723834&hash=item2ab291713a:g:IZIAAOSwYUlbaeHA[/URL]

Anyone see any reason they won’t fit? 48mm WP, they say from 2017 6-days build. New....

CB, don’t touch the 4CS. They are for sale for a reason.

You should be able to pick up a set of CC’s relatively cheap. They were on the KTM’s well. Husky, I’m not sure?

One of my Bergs has the OC’s and geez they are working great. At the right price I wouldn’t give these pass.

I would personally use any of the available forks - Öhlins cartridges, open chamber, closed chamber, 4CS-type closed chamber, air forks (which afaik exist in cone valve and standard shimmed-valve types).

The CC and 4CS need more setup and KTM seemed to have some issues getting the feel right out of the box on these - but I’ve read enough about them that I believe they can be made to work very well, based on both owners reports and about the technology in general.

The closed chamber forks are sealed and pressurized so they are more involved to DIY revalve, but there are aftermarket tools which make it very workable (needles etc.).

But the CC forks are considered less good out of the box, and take time/money to get right - so the used price can and should reflect that.

But if in doubt I’d look out for OC forks.

If you can’t find any then the others will be fine because we will make them fine :)

4CS got a bad rep at the start. I'm in the range of rider weights they are designed for and it is fine. The harshness issue went away after a standard service. I think they were overfilled with oil from the factory.

For these 2017 4CS forks, the are 'so cheap' (at the moment, bidding closes saturday so we will see) that I figure I might as well by a new set for the price of a used set that probably needs a rebuild. I asked the seller about axel size and they replied "22mm one side and 25mm the other." Isn't the 2011 Husa a 26mm (bike is at the shop 1/2 hr away, so can't measure myself unfortunately). Thoughts on that?

They also mentioned the brakes mounts might be an issue. Has that changed between 2011 and 2017?

You guys have been a big help. Thanks--

I'm 90% sure that the 2017 4CS fork will have the smaller axle that will not fit your Berg wheel. You want a 2014 or 2015 4CS fork which had the bigger axle.

Complete WP fork & Berringer brake for sale

I have a clean set of WP forks , Upper & lower triple trees complete ,Berringer caliper & wave rotor with front axle bolt/nut from an 06' FS 650.
I had planned on swapping this set up into my FE 450 , however realized the disc is much larger & I would likely damage it as I ride alot of deep mud & rocks.
This was of many parts I purchased from a bike being parted out due to drop valve engine.

If interested let me know & I'll figure out a fair price for it all plus shipping.

PM would be best

Thanks---Don
