I have the opportunity to get a '03 FE 501 with about 500 miles on it. I know the guy real good and know the bike was well taken care of. Do you think $3500 wouild be a good price? What (if any) problems did they have that year. I can't think of any. Please provide any input you can think of. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like a fair price to me. The only drawbacks would be not having an FCR carb, the SEM as opposed to Kukosan ignition and the e-start not being up to the 04-05 level. On the plus side its a 501.

Hate to ask this but.....I also have a chance at a '05 Husky TE 510 with approx. 100 miles for $5K (same guy). I tend to be leaning towards the 501. I believe the 501 has more torque and punch. I've rode a '02 501 and really liked it, and I've rode the 510 up and down the street and it seems like it's electric in it's power delivery. Not as much punch. Decisions....Decisions.....Any opinions would be greatly appriciated.

I currently own a 2003 FE501E and love the bike. Suspension works good and handling is very good in the corners. A bit nervous at high speeds, but ignore it because it won't go into a tank slapper. You are right, the motor is perfect for off road use. I don't really want the superior throttle response of the 04 and newer so the smoother Dellorto and SEM combo suite me fine. Heat, vibration, and corrosion from water take out the stators. I tend to short shift keeping the vibration down and routinely check the stator to see that it is clean. Knock on wood, but have owned a number of Bergs and have had only one stator issue. High revs tend to cause the intake valves to sink in the head and wear rockers as well. My first Berg got ridden like I stole it. That's the bike that gave me the above mentioned problems. Keeping the valves adjusted and the carb. jetted correctly really help the starting. Mine has always started on the button. All in all, this is the best bike I have owned to date and don't regret the purchase a bit.

Well I'm on my way to the desert to figure this mess out. I'm trying to talk him into bringing both bikes out to do a side by side taste test. Will post Monday what I came up with. Thanks for the info.

And the winner is...............

Da Berg!!!

The 501 motor is out of this world. Electric smooth with a hit that won't quit. And it steers like it's on rails. I'm very happy with this bike. Best bike I have EVER owned. And I have a few.

The Husky is very nice also, but to me not quite as good as the Berg. Great straight line ability but not as good steering and punch. I think the Husky is a great point to point racer.

Congrats on the purchase. Glad to see another 501 lover. What are those 2 Yamahas doing polluting a fine stable of Euro bikes? :)

Well I bought the SR 500 in '78 used with 1000 miles as a commuter and it grew on me. The Viagra I got from a co-worker for $1500 when blue book was $3500+. Can't pass up a good deal I guess.
