I normally use Motorex Crosspower fully synthetic but I'm getting annoyed at the price! The cheapest I can find in the UK for 4 liters delivered is £50. All my mates use the Silkolene equivalent and it's £28 at our local bike shop!
That is a massive difference and I was just wondering if I would be doing my engine harm if I switched to the Silkolene? Also would semi synthetic also be ok as this is even cheaper!!

Thanks!

Ben

im just getting into all this. I bought Castrol power t4 (I think) full synthetic but picked up 10w-40 I was looking more at the 10W as the book says 5W. How much of an issue would it be if I run the bike with the lower upper rating (40 rather than 50)?
I can pass this stuff on to my Husky owning mate and go hunt for some 10w-50

Cheers Pete

It all depends on what you are doing with your Berg. If you ride competition and rev the snot out of it use the best quality oil you can find and change frequently.
If you are a weekend warrior and do green-laning: it doesn't matter as long as there's oil in the engine (& cooling liquid).

For my bikes I use Putoline and Motorex. My criteria are: it must be easy to order and available at the moment. But I do use oil specific for use in Enduro bikes, much in the same way as I always spray the chains although I know that chain lube is gone after 10 kms...
In general I change the oil after 6 to 7 full days of riding (used to be 5 days) which equals to about 20- 25 hours. The oil comes out black and thick.
The engines generally need an overhaul after 12500-15000 kms but this is mainly because of fine dust getting through the airfilter.
The piston rings are then worn and sometimes the hard layer of the cilinder is worn away in TDC.

Another observation: the 390s (less HP) last longer than the 450s. The older 390 (I own two) has done more than 40000 km (yes 40K) and has never been opened.

So concentrating on the airfilter is more important than the grade of oil if the use of your bikes is "mild"
But that goes only for my terrain (hard packed and often dusty). Mud and sand are more demanding for an engine.

Cheers,
Adrian

I use Delvac mx 15w 40 mineral diesel engine oil. Change it @ 5 to 10Hrs
engine has survived 300hrs on this oil. (big end and balancer are@ 400hrs)

So i say use cheap good oil and change it often

that would only make sense if the price of the cheap oil is at least halve of that of a high grade oil.

The Delvac bottle even has a Berg logo on it! That big wheeled tractor.

I run the same stuff and used it on my -06 gsxr also. By far it's one of the best bang for buck oils you can use, and it has been analysed to be infact better than most synthetic crap that is on market. Sometimes I mix a little bit (100-300ml) Motul 300V 15w-50 to give that nice ester based synthetic protection on cold starts and extreme abuse use.

Still I change oils everytime @ 5h of use.

I do the same for long trips
1l motul 300v into 4l of delvac

Im more going to use the bike for a play here and there (not very experienced off road on 2 wheels Being a Landrover owner for 22yrs... But have been out on my Harley Davidson MT350, Armstrong MT500 and Husky TC510 (1988) The latter 2 sold in the last year) I will use it for the odd 10mile blat to and from work mixed roads as well.
