G'Day,
I have a 05 FE450 and in the manual it says when the motor iis cold the oil level should be at the bottom of the sight glass and when hot at the top. I filled the bike cold to the bottom of the glass and ran it on the bench. After a couple of seconds running I rechecked and had to top up. This happened a few times until I thought "it must be getting warm now - I'll run it for a bit longer". All this time I'm checking the oil and it's not at the top of the glass so I put more in. In the end I thought " Christ there has to be enough in there now" even though it was only half full and the engine was nice and warm .
I decided to let it cool down and see if the level dropped but when it was cold the oil was still half way up the glass.
WTF is going on?
Cheers
Dave

Dave, was the engine up to operating temp or just warm, this could be why your level hasn't moved much.
Did you measure how much oil you put in, that should give you a reference, about 850mL to the bottom of the glass, if you over fill, it will puke oil out of the weep hole, but if you fit one of Orangeberg's seal kits it cures this problem 100%.

Regards

Steve.

Here is the official Tech bulletin.

As you can see from the tech bulletin it is only supposed to be half way when hot. I agree with Sparks, it's about 850cc's when doing an oil change. And be sure and lean the bike over to the left after draining the oil, with the oil filter screen still installed, and kick it through several times to get the rest of the oil out from beneath the crank. Then tilt it back over to the right and pull the oil filter screen and watch how much more oil comes out.

Where is the weep hole?
I was putting new oil in it after fitting a new 5th gear so it was completely dry but you're right - I should have measured it. I will have to find a suitable container.
Also should I re tension the head bolts after a certain amount of time?
Thanks for the help

Hi Dave,

If you haven't got oil dribbling down over the oil sight glass then you haven't got a problem, yet.
If you look behind the hose that comes from the water pump cover you will see it.

Most people suffer this problem, the factory mod was to reduce the amount of oil in the engine, bit of a cheap way round it if you ask me.

850ml of oil for a 550/650 engine is a bit on the low side. with the Orangeberg seal kit fitted you can run the full 1lt.

No I haven't seen any thing in the manual that says you need to retorque the head bolts.
But Taffy might know different.

Regards

Sparks.

I thought that was the one - under the water pump cover. In the manual it says it will leak if the o ring is buggered but the KTM seal might be the go.
Thanks again for all your help
Dave

fwiw, the last two head gaskets i changed (501-650) did not need retorqued. i checked the 501 after about 100 miles and it was ok.

the oil level does odd things. pretty sure it has to do with oil draining back out of the oil filter cavity and also a little extra oil being held inside the crankcase after a short run, the lil reed valve lets it leak out after a while

on a completely empty engine I need to put 1200ml in to get half way up the glass

I used to wonder what was up but worked out if I put 1L in after a standard quick oil drain then it was about right, you'l get a feel for it afer a while.

I thought if you put to much oil then the bike would suck it up an area and then burn it off? Am I wrong? I remember one time I started my bike I could see smoke, wasnt sure if it was excess partially burned fuel or oil. I did not do along WOT pull either before putting it away, smoke went away and it doesnt do it anymore.
