i have a 2008 fe550e. when the engine is cold the oil level is barely showing in the glass indicator. when the motorcycle has been driven for 10 minutes and i turn it off, after the oil has settled back down, it shows a pefect half full at the glass/oil indicator. my question is this: where should the oil level be when the engine is cold? should it be at the half way mark in the glass indicator or not?

Thanks!

You have it right. Bottom of the sight glass when cold. There is a factory bulletin stating that excessive oil levels contribute to overheating. The bulletin states bottom of sight glass when cold.

The bulletin is posted on this site somewhere.

The service manual also says bottom of the sight glass when cold. Im runing my 05 Fe650 the same way. When its hot the oils about the middle of the glass.

If I remember correctly, it has always been bottom of window cold, middle of window warm.

As another side, when racing both Lineaweaver and I used to add a little more oil - about 100-150 ml.

All the best,
Simon
