I'll just throw this out there for anyone to munch on. Lately, I've been noticing that after I ride a while, sometimes my bike will smoke rather badly for a minute on hot startup and then stop smoking. Oil smoke. I've also seen fluctuations in my oil level, as if oil is pooling up somewhere and showing less than is really there. It never smokes on cold start. I'll rule out rings, guides, etc. because I'd expect rings to give the most trouble cold as the piston hasn't expanded to full dimension yet. Could the reed valves cause the oil level flux? I'm not terribly worried about the smoke as it's more embarrassing than anything. I'll probably tear it down in a week or so and inspect everything as I'm getting ready for the spring series. by the way, I havn't noticed any oil in the intake tract. I thought maybe it was pulling oil/air mixture through the breather into the air tract and pooling up, but I see no evidence to support that theory. No plug fouling, no abnormal noise, runs like a scalded cat on carpet. I'll check with the doc {the other one} and see if there's anything there. One more thing; my motor likely has only 50-60 hours on it.   Let me have it, boys

Hi Corey,
On hot shut down thin oil bleeds back through the crankcase reed valve causing momentary wet sumping upon warm re-start. Such floods the rings with warm, thin oil.

Said oil is obviously thinner when warm than cold. The thinner oil is more inclined to escape past the rings when sumped. Often a stone cold engine will not smoke even when badly sumped via sitting for weeks.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Dale

PS
It is entirely possible you have a cracked, deformed or broken reed.

So Dale,if I read correctly, you are saying that "said" reed valve actually keeps the bulk of the lubricating oil away from the crankshaft ala dry sump. I assume you also mean it is designed to hold that oil away from that area even when the motor is shut down. I believe I once saw a flow diagram on the old Husaberg "slosh" oil system , and I understood it pretty well, but it's been a few years. I'll check the reed after I ride it tomorrow. thanks for the tips. CC

"Said reed valve actually keeps the bulk of the lubricating oil away from the crankshaft ala dry sump." Yes.

"I assume you also mean it is designed to hold that oil away from that area even when the motor is shut down." Such is indeed the intention, however, we all know given enough time the sump will eventually fill.

Best Regards,
Dale

hi doctorcorey,
i had the same thing some time ago with my 95 fe 600, it was smoking at start up like hell. the reed valve was ready to be cut off-it holded its self by some few fibers its base.
so to inspect the reed valve don't just look at it when open the side cover, but uncrew the 2 m4 bolts and take it out

regards

Hey, thanks for the info, you'all. I'll order a new reed valve ASAP. I wasn't really worried about the smoke too much but I know oil can cause detonation at higher power settings. Detonation+short skirt piston=BAD. P.S. Any advice on whom to call for the best and/or fastest parts service for Husabergs? Thanx again, Corey. :D

Why MOTOXOTICA of course! give em a ring and if dan has it in stock, (i would be suprised if he did not) it will be to you in no time.
