Hope someone can answer a few questions for me.

I went to buy a new 2004 FS650E yesterday. The dealer started the motorcycle and after letting it run for a few minutes oil started dripping from the "seep hole", or "pin-hole" at the water pump assembly area.

1-Why is there oil leaking from here ?

2-If oil is leaking from here and is caused by a bad seal....could coolant already have gone thru and leaked into the engine as well?

3-Is this an easy fix and can this cause other problems down the road?

Because of this I held off on buying the motorcycle, this is my first time at buying a Husaberg, and my 1st impression was not good. Could this be an indication of things to come ?

Are you sure it is oil? My 98 FE600E seeps a little coolant. I was told some do and some don't and do not worry about it. (Its been almost 7yrs)
A Berg may take a little more lovin' than other bikes - but it returns a whole lot more than anything else. :D

Hi acyr,

And welcome. The seep of oil is actually a typical problem that has been there since the engine was introduced in 2001 and is due to purely silly design (IMNSHO).

It is a 20 minute job for your dealer to resolve requiring him to take off the clutch casing and replace the oil seal. Providing the seal is fitted properly, it shouldn't be a problem.

As for the coolant, if coolant had leaked it would come out of the same weep hole way before it goes into the engine.

Hi Simon,

Are those engine run at all before they get shipped?

How could anyone miss this? I'm not talking just a small leak...but actually driping oil. Aslo the dealer mentionned that he replaced the jetting since it was to lean from the factory. Odd that this leak did not show-up when they did the test run.

Am I just being paranoid here ? Just don't want to buy a brand-new fixer upper. I understand about having to do maintenance and all...but brand new and already an oil leak is not encouraging me to buy a Husaberg.

By the way I have confidence in the dealer....just trying to sort out the brand and decide if I should by the bike.

Thanks

Andre

The leaking that you engine have is due a seal in the bearing who work on the counter balance shaft near the water pump. It is a very strange seal because it doesn't appear in the parts manual. One of these days I have tried to replace it ( due to endless leakings) and nobody as identify it. I try in the best seal houses and nothing. Then I have to remove the seal, clean it very well, remove the inner spring, open it ( it have an open end like the fork seals) and cut a bit (+- 1mm). I suppose it wont going to leak but, this weekend going to test.

Near to this seal is another to work with the water pump and prevents the water goes in to the engine. This one is a normal seal (double leap) 10x18x6.

If I was you, I didn't accept the bike without the problem solved.

Hi Andre,

I'm afraid I don't know whether they actually run the engines prior to shipping from the factory nowadays - I would sincerely hope they do!

The bikes are received from the factory in a big cardboard box that is then assembled by either the importer/distributor/dealer and should really be test run then I would hope too.

Why this has been missed? Who knows?

However, I do think it really is too much to judge a whole bike by this little problem and you probably are being a bit paranoid - but as always there is a small risk it might be one of those "Friday afternoon, just been down the pub for lunch" assemblies.

I know that doesn't seem to comforting but at the end of the day, it's difficult to give a concrete answer.

As for the bike being lean - that's just normal, emmisions regulations are such that they have to be shipped that way.

Cheers,
Simon

Hi guys,

yes Simon you´re right.
Normally every engine has to do a test run, even before it´s getting assembled into the frame, I think.
At least the engine has to run before the bike leaves the factory.
Last year I visited the KTM factory in Austria and I saw what they do with the
bikes before they deliver them. It was interesting.
It is really very very unusual that there comes oil out of the seep hole at a brand new bike. I didn´t heard of that before.

Husby, the last few days I had also to handle this problem. A friend of mine had also oil coming out this hole and we saw that this seal ring doesn´t appear in the parts manual, but
I didn´t reailize that this seal ring isn´t a standard ring. I hope my dealer can get one.
Let´s wait and see.

Acyr, this hole makes sense, it´s not only a hole. This hole indicates that your seal rings are not ok. When there is dripping oil or coolant you´ll have to check it before your engine gets damaged. Really useful or let me say thought-out - like the whole engine.
Obviously they missed to check if there are any leaks at the engine. I totally agree with you that this is unacceptable. It could be a proof for a bad quality management at KTM, or it is a proof for KTM´s indifference in Husaberg. Who dares to vote this incident?
Can it be that you speak german? Your name Andre lets me think so...?! Maybe I can convince you of Husaberg by talking on the phone or creating an email in german.

Hope you´ll decide to buy the right bike!

best regards

Hi ACYR,
This is indeed a common issues amongst post 2000 Husaberg engines.
As mentioned the bearing and oil seal are separate though supplied only as a pair. Simply have your dealer address the issue prior to taking delivery.

Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Dale

Thanks for the replies guys, help you get from sites like this is invaluable.

Do you guys think I should wait for hte 05 models ?? Some improvement to the engine might be worth going for it.

Also anyone ahve any ideas how many hours one can put on these before doing major work?

Thanks Again

Andre
(hribman I can't speak German)

My 2000 style motors weep coolant also. Does it come from the camshaft seals, or the aluminum seal holder/spacer "O" rings? I just replaced the 501 water pump seals but had to re-use the o-rings, which looked fine.
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Providing the camshaft is not damaged and the seals / O-Rings in good condition coolant weeping should not be an issue on pre 2001 engines.

Hi Andre,
I personally see no real advantage in purchasing an 05 over that of a new 04. Simply have the faulty seal replaced and enjoy your purchase.
