Hello everyone ive got an oil leak on a 2002 husaberg 550 see the pic below, engine has just been rebuilt with new mains,rod,piston,counter balancer, seals and gaskets, now it runs fine with plenty of power but is dripping oil at a fair rate out of the hole in the picture anyone got any ideas?

it's not a big deal. it could be one of two things so you may decide to do both at once. you need to remove the sidecover and fit a new waterpump shaft 'O' ring and a new waterpump bearing C/W rubber side seal.

the bearing isn't cheap but i have one in stock if you need it. if you're going to have a go yourself, you may consider getting a w/p seal and gasket as well as a sidecover gasket as insurance ifg in your first visit you make a bit of a hash of it.

Thanks taffy, what kind of price am i looking at for all the bits you listed above, Im going to do it myself, i did a pump seal on a ktm 525 a bit back but it didnt involve taking the clutch cover off. Does the bearing come out easy enough or is it pressed into the case.

daleo has just pointed out to me that you are pointing at the crank holding bolt. suggest you undo this and use some fresh silicon etc to make it seal nicely. the place i'm on about is two inches to the right behind the black hose in your photo.

Ok, is the bolt recessed in the hole that i have circled in red or is the bolt missing altogether?
 
well, i disagree about it being a crank holding bolt. my 650 has no such fitting, but my 450 does. it appears to be a blank hole, with a metal plug pressed in place. prolly a drilled passage that was capped off after the drilling process. the crank holding bolt wasn't on the 02 models and is about 4" below this one. if that's indeed where its coming from, clean it and put a blob of j-b weld or the equivalent to seal it.
 
Thanks ned, just been into the garage and had a proper look and there is a grub screw recessed in the hole, i have taken it out and its about 10mm long and i can insert an allen key about 100mm into the hole and it doesent appear to touch any thing inside the block,could this be a hole for holding the crank at tdc while you reassemble the engine?

Jeebus,

It's as Ned says..........It's not, repeat not, a crank holding bolt. This an oil galley block off plug.

This is the oil galley that brings oil from the pump to the front of the motor, then through a passage in the side case, to a small seal that fits over the end of the crank, and thus supplies oil pressure to the main bearings and big end of the connecting rod. The 2004 repair manual (free down load from the .com or .se site) has a good diagram of the circulation path of the pressurized lubrication system.

You will need to remove the screw and remove all the oil. Try and get as much of oil out of the screw hole as possible, but don't go shooting contact cleaner or anything is there as you may damage the seal in the side case.

You will need to put some sort of thread sealant on the plug to seal up the threads. Put the sealant ONLY ON THE PLUG, DO NOT PUT ANY SEALANT IN THE HOLE. By only applying the sealant to the plug you won't run the risk of pushing the sealant into the oil galley.

JB weld as Ned says I'm sure will do the job, but, I'm not so sure whether or not you'd be successful at ever removing the plug without destroying the threads in the case. You might try some Loctite PST Thread Sealant 592.
 
Thank you daleo I havent yet put the plug back in yet but will seal the threads when i do,Would ptfe tape that plumbers use be suitable for wrapping around the grub screw before i put it back in.
 
i had a close look at the one in my 04 450 and i gess they lowballed it after the earlier models and just smacked in a steel plug..no threads. the reason my 02 650 doesn't have one is prolly because it was an early 02 and didn't get the upgraded oil passage.
like dale says, clean up the grubscrew, seal it and reinstall and if you feel like it, seal the hole over the screw with rtv. you should never have a reason to remove it.
 
Thanks for all the reply guys, this bike has been nothing but trouble,had a main failiure the first time it went out which ruined nearly everything had to have the left case welded,after it was rebuilt the carb went leaving my brother stranded and now thats sorted it leaking oil. Which thankfully is a nice easy fix,Thanks again,mark

my 2001 650 also had the same oil leak which i fixed with a bit of thread tape.
there is another one that also can leak ,its in line with the drain bung in the left hand case,its also part of that oil gallery.
i was originally thinking i might connect into the top one to run the oil cooler,but thought it would probably be easier to go through the oil filter cover.
can't say i've seen a crank locking bolt though?
is that in the late model cases only?
sorry to hear you learnt the hard way like me mark.
any husaberg thats done over 200 engine hours is on borrowed time as far as i'm concerned.
its a lot cheaper to pull it down a bit early than let it self destruct.
whats happening here taff.i think we may have taught you something?

i always shoot from the hip fella! sometimes ya miss! who needs to hold the bloody crank still anyway....!

Thanks again everyone the bikes all sorted now, repacked the exhaust while i was at it and it sound miles better, weather permitting should be able to get out for a bit of track time this weekend :D :D
