Hi all, before i rip the engine out I thought I would ask the question. I have an oil leak which seems to be coming from the upper rear of the engine. Where the swingarm shaft goes through the gearbox the engine casing is covered in oil which also spreads onto the swingarm and gathers around the rear lower shock mount. I can't see any obvious place where it is coming from but on a 105 mile run today I lost 200ml of oil, a fair ammount i think. Is there anything I should take a look at (hard to see with battery, starter etc in the way) before I start to tear bits off.

Thanks Trevor.

the most obvious place to me is the kickstart decomp shaft. there is an 'o' ring for it but i've seen them leak there. sadly the next thing is a set of cracked cases.

Thanks Taffy, seems possible, doesn't drip any oil on garage floor whilst left for a week unused so it's obviously being forced out under pressure, can the said O ring be replaced with the engine in the frame? What would be involved if I were to replace it?
Cheers

RE: Re: RE: Oil leak

well maybe the best thing to do is treat the bike to some jizer and start again. you need to know that it's not from the rocker cover which is often the culprit.

infortunately the shaft for the kickstart decomp is the very last thing you'll get at in the sidecover after you've removed the clutch and kickstart assembly.

RE: Re: RE: Oil leak

you prolly have the famous warped clutch cover oil leak. does your bike have the extra bolt hole above the k/s shaft at about 2 oclock in addition to the one at 12 oclock? the reson the extra bolt is there is to help clamp it down. if you pull the cover and look at the surface, you will be able to see the warp. if thats it, you can build up a layer or two of sealer and let it dry then put a new gasket and off you go.

Berger, case seems fine thankfully plus the leak is coming from higher than that, behind the battery box or maybe near the decomp as taffy suggested.

Ned, have ordered a new gasket for the clutch cover as it looks as though it has been off before, I'll have a look for the warp.

Taffy, ordered a seal for the decomp too, whilst I'm in there if the casing looks ok then I'll go deeper and check the decomp seal.

Cheers for the input folks, your a good bunch, let you know the outcome over the coming weekend.

Just an update, it was the kick start decomp shaft leaking. I followed an earlier post regarding this problem. There is no seal on this shaft as standard so an 8mm O ring was recommended. Starter motor off, decomp lever off and the O ring can be slid on. Also did the clutch cover gasket whilst I was there due to a slight leak near the selector shaft.
Amazed how perfect the internals look, puts the mind at rest to see everything looking good. Anyway, gunked the engine clean and went for an hour ride and swingarm, shock and rear of the engine dry as a bone, well pleased.
Cheers for helping me sort this one.

so you slid an'O' ring onto the shaft from the outside of the cases? or from the inside? you say you pulled the starter motor but also mention the clutch cover gasket?

Hi Taffy, did from the outside. The post I read seemed to suggest stretching the O ring over the decomp lever and then onto the shaft, this seemed a bit of an extreme stretch for an 8mm O ring hence removal of starter motor to gain access to the allen bolt which holds the lever in place, did the clutch cover gasket whilst I was in the mood and whilst my 3 year old son was at a party, he likes to remove important parts and bury them in the garden, found a spark plug in the vegatable patch the other day.

ha! ha! nice one! quiute a lad!

you know, if you go to the dutch clog decomp you can remove the cable from the bars, the shaft you are on about from the cases and the shaft from the cylinder head. replace the two shafts with an ordinary allen head bolt with the heads on the inside and the nuts on the outside. i shamfer the head of the bolts to wedge into the holes and then a washer on the outside with some silicone on it.

works a treat and cleans up the lines of the bike. i would make some cute little anodised bolts if i thought there was a call for it. froggy would love all that bling!

regards

Taffy
