Hi there,

I own a 2002 470 which i just had rebuild about 20h ago,i went for a 3-4 hour ride on the weekend, after washing the bike and as usual drying the stator, when i took the cover off there was about 100ml of oil in there. My sight glass was about just over half way. I put 1litre of oil in the bike, anyone got any ideas.

Denzo.

It could be the crankshaft seal. Does anyone know if it could be replaced without splitting the cases?

denzo

you need to pull the flywheel and then change the oil seal on the end of the crank. it's easy enough to do. i would hand drill with a 6mm bit and then stick one or two ST screws in and pull.

one thing i would do before i started though is to pull the ignition cover off, go around the other side of the bike, lean over it and pull that flywheel up and down and try for the dreaded 'CLONK'! THEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR REAL PROBLEM IS.

regards

Taffy

Thanks for the reply, what is the dreaded CLONK? My bike was running sweat i started it after i washed it. thanks for the help.

up & down movement is your mains.
if you replace your oil seal, when you have up & down movement in your mains,it will just leak again anyway.if you have that up & down movement don't hesitate to replace them ,cause when they go it will destroy everything ,have a look in my gallery what happened to mine.
..weed..

Has anyone ever tried sealing the stator cover & opening an oil hole into the stator cavity? Or would it flood so much that all hell would break loose?!! Have seen other bikes that run the stator in oil, maybe even an SEM? Azza's comment might not be a bad idea.

Well BundyBear, as you can see I spent hours dwelling over the 'preserve the SEM stator' theory, and to think people considered it a joke - sheesh...LMAO.

Really, what bikes run the stator in oil? is it separate from the rest of the engine to avoid contamination? veery interesting..

Azza.

I'm sure I've seen it on Japanese bikes from way back - like '70s. I could be wrong. Nah, just about sure of it?? Buggered if I know now!!!

i thought half the bikes ran in oil?

from '03 there is a small breather hole as standard under the cases near to the stator cover. all you would need to do as an experiment is drill say 2 x 6mm holes and thread them right on the lower edge of the cases when you have the engine down.

don't work? fit two worm screws and forget you did it! might help the RH main if the seal was pulled. keep it well lubricated.

denzo?
we haven't forgotten you mate, just to say that the oil seal only just gets up onto a lip on the crank by about 1mm otherwise, if it is out from the back wall at all it drops down a level and you have no effective seal so all you need to do firstly is to get a flywjheel puller, remove the flywheel and have a ganders?

there is a flywheel puller from oz for sale on flea bay right now.

Hmm the KTM does (the Kokusan stator)

i know the dukes do and i thought most jap bikes i have worked on do. it's quite common!

I've tapped an oil galley and added a spray jet to cool the stator, along with a return path to the sump. Works well, but there are easier solutions to longer stator life...
