Good Morning,

As stated in a different topic I recently purchased a 1996 FC600 to ride with my son, so I have no experience with the Husaberg brand.

I am looking to change the oil every 8 hours as the previous owner had, my confusion is that the previous owner said this bike didn't have a oil filter, and he was told that by the Husaberg dealer he bought the bike from 2001. This disagrees with a owners manual on this site.

The bike is stored in a friend's heated shed 45 miles away so I can't just go check. I need to order a couple of parts for this bike and would like to know if I need to include a couple of filters as well.

In addition what oil should I be running?
The owners manual states I should be running 5w50 Synthetic oil. The previous owner has been using 20w50 Castrol conventional oil.

Thank you for your advise.

Tad

Husabergs changed over the years, improving and/or making them more marketable. I might be wrong on this, someone correct me if so, but I think the 2000 year was the first with a replaceable filter element. If that is correct, your '96 has a screen that is to be cleaned at the time of oil change. You will find the screen in the oil drain plug hole. As to what oil to use, each and every one of us has a favorite, and an opinion, and they differ a lot. I will say that the oil you use is the best insurance towards long engine life, use the best that you can afford. Husaberg recommends synthetic for a reason, it does lubricate at extreme temps, and a few other bennies, according to tests. Many of us like Shell Rotella T synthetic, available at Wally World in gallons, aimed at the diesel truck owner. KTM recommends Motorex synthetic, also a fine oil. If I ran Castrol non-synthetic, I would change it very often. What I find to be an aid in this oil changing thing is to have a "kit" handy for changes, a funnel to add oil, a wrench to remove the drain plug, a receptacle for the old oil, and a system to hold the bike leaned over to the RH side (I use a trailer tie-down strap secured to my workbench and to the handlebar end brush guard) so frequent oil changes are painless.

97 was the first year of the oil pump and I believe it was the first year for the filter. I owned a 97 and it definitely had the filter. Not sure about 96.

Pre oil pump models(89--96) had a oil screen/filter in about the same place as the filter on the modern engines..You can check the parts books in the download section of www.husaberg.se ... former files...

All "E" start models have used a pump and filter.

Eventually all models (late 1997 or so) came equipped with said pump and filter.

I took a trip to my friend's shed today, I removed the screen.
I was pleasantly surprised, even though the screen hasn't been removed and cleaned in the last 6 years it was clean with no sludge, or debris at all.

8O excellent !!!

oil

I recently bought a used 03 fe501e, and the prior owner always used motorex synthetic, I am plainning on using either motorex or amsoil, I have been told that motorex is the European equivalent to Amsoil. I switched my wifes 2000 Volvo with 115k miles over to Amsoil, and actually noticed a differnce almost immediately in how it runs.

RE: oil

my 99 fe400e has a filter and screen..........i have researched the oil, and it seems amsoil wins hands down when it comes to the numbers....everyone has their fav oil, have been using amsoil 10-40 full syn. gonna change the ford lightning and caddie both to amsoil, auto oil tho..........LOL. i could be wrong about this , but it seems the better you keep up on oil changes......basic maint. in general.....the better off you will be.
