Just bought a 04 fs650e. About to do my first oil change and was searching different threads for oil and oil filter most of you are using. Looks like Motul 300v 15/50 wins. But as for oil filter, couldn't find anything. Is there a preference? A quick Google search only came up with a k&n kn-155. I'm guessing there has to be more, probably better options out there. What are you guys using?

I use the k&n oil filter, hasn't let me down. I do my oil and filter after each ride so I'm not sure how it goes long term though.

If you check your local bike shop they probably have a other brands that should go ok as well

I used both kn and hi-flow brand filters in my 650
Only did the filter every third oil change

Tgat size of filter has a long enough service life that you could go 1,500 miles on it withoutt it losing effectiveness.

I look at mine and clean the oil screen if needed. On 4 bikes I have only replaced one. All 70d motors

I check the screen every oil change, for the extra minute or two it takes why not?

Most of the time I forget about the screen at the head. Thank You for reminding Me. I added a magnet to the filter only $5.00 cheap insurance or wast of money? Told the magnet is only good for 5 oil changes. How stupid do they think We are...........

*repeat

It made it 543 hours...
05' 650. Unopened exept for dual valve springs, valve seaLs, timing chain, rocker arm bearings and water pump seals.

21,000miles is 33,796 km

38mph average means a fair amount of off road riding.

That's incredible.

All the threads on here make these bikes look like time bombs.

I take it you keep the revs fairly low?

What failed at 543 hours?

No on revs. FS650 Geared a little low for a sumo@ 16/44, track, off road, up and down canyons and some freeway if I need toget home.
Rarely lugged it, saw 7k+ rpm's often when passing multiple cars at once.
Main bearings are clapped out, found some metal I've never seen before on the magplug.
