The thread on my oil drain plug has been getting progressively worse and has now stripped leaving only 2 complete turns of thread left.

Has anyone used a Helicoil on a 650 oil drain hole? I've noticed the hole has been machined flat during manufacturing with the rest of the crankcase on the bottom leaving very little room to play with when drilling out to use a M12x1.5 Heli.

Anyone's experience with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

I over torqued my fe550's oil drain - Doh !
I had a local shop install a Helicoil, I think it was 10X1.5mm because the
case is thin near the bottom.
Worked well, but no one makes a mag drain bolt of that thread.
I just added a rare earth magenet to the allen wrench hex hole and it stays.
Future plans is to drill the end out and press in magnet.

Good luck, I know it scary worring about the cost of engine cases.

Cheers
Stu

Thanks for the info Stu

Was the oil drain on your 550 originally M12? I wonder how they fitted an M10 helicoil, that would be better as I guess no drilling would be required

Don't mention new cases or i'll start crying LOL :(

Yes original was the m12. I guess the M10 with courser 1.5 was a nice fit with minimal
metal removed, he was worried about the bottom of the case.

good luck.
