What is the thought on these. Also would it work on our bikes (the ktm kit)?

If you are referring to the KTM kit that replaces the ignition cover with the billet cover/cooler, from HT racing, then no, it won't fit.

My thoughts are, for the motorcycle's intended purpose, frequent changes and a good synthetic oil work just fine. Actually, any oil of your choice. I continue to be amazed, considering the small capacity, how clean and unabused the oil looks when I drain it after a hard race or ride.

Now, Husaberg engines fitted into roadracers or dirttrackers may very well benefit from an oil cooler.

Unless you are abusing the clutch average oil temperatures will never see 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

The extra liter of oil capacity you get when running these external oil coolers could be good for extended desert racing and extended oil service intervals.

On the downside you're adding external oil lines where none existed before. This external plumbing ain't much to look at.

Well stated and a very good point.

Some questions for those in the oil cooler know:

Is it best to tap into main lubrication circuit or have the oil cooler on a bypass circuit.

I have seen automotive kits (bypass) fitted with an oil thermostat that does not allow full cooler function until oil is sufficiently hot enough to require it.

And if running a bypass cooler, has anyone ever investigated the possibility of using an RFS crancase scavenge pump (12mm wide rotor) compared to the RFS and Husabergs pressure feed pump which is only 10mm ??

My thoughts would be upgrading the Husabergs 10mm rotor to a 12mm one (if possible) by machining the cover to take the extra rotor width and a bypass oil cooler would be the best option ??

Good idea or bad idea ?, or does it already get done ?

Why? Is there a known problem with oil degredation due to overheating?

Unique riding conditions place heavy loads on any cooling system- ie very tight/slow single track, hard slogging in heavy sand, dragging a sidecar around etc etc.

An oil cooler simply adds more surface area/transfer ability to pull heat out of the engine with compared to expecting the water jacket/radiator that only cools bore/cyl head to deal with totally.

Fitting one can only do more good than bad in certain conditions ???

I just ordered three of the Joe Racer units, when they show up I will give all of you an update on the installation and the quality of the parts. I have two of them going onto supermoto's and one going onto an FE......Stay tuned for more!!

Smstar: someone had some very bad experience with Joe Racer. Product was hard fit, tech support did not exist, and when others tried to buy the product they were abruptly told "not available until further notice".

Hopefully they have decided to change their attitude.

couldn't cooling efficiency be increased by focusing on cooling ability of radiator/coolant - if that is cool then engine and oil should be - or at least well within safe operating temperatures?? Put a fan on radiator as discussed in earlier forums for tight stuff or just ride faster :)

So far these guys seem to be good to deal with....I have not recieved the package yet but my contact with them has gone well. I hope that the parts are as good as they claim to be. I will keep everyone informed on the progress.

I just finished installing the cooler and I will say that the parts included in the kit are very good quality. I feel that the cost is a little high for what you get ($350 USD) but I think that a person needs to look at this purchase from the "saving your motor" point of view as opposed to the bang for buck side. It included all of the parts to do the install except for the hose clamps and the 45 degree angle fittings. (kit came with one and I used 2) The instructions are not the greatest but the install is pretty straight foreword. It would be nice if they gave a better idea about where the oil level in the case should be after install. They simply state that it will require 6-800ml extra. I started with 600 and after a test ride I will see if it is too much......AKA oil spewing into the frame and carb creating "bat-fog" because of the overfull situation. :D I think that this kit is best suited for SM use as the lines seem vulnerable and may cause a problem with bush riding. My last comment for anyone considering the kit is that it uses the short KTM oil filter, so don't forget to pick one up before install. The pics are up....you can find them in the smstar gallery. :)

Just a note about the guys at Joe Racer.....very good to deal with, communication and shipping were handled very well.
