Has anyone put an oil cooler on a berg, benefits could be extra oil capacity, pretty easy to do i think also off the filter cover have two pipes coming out of new cover one plugged into hole where oil filter sits then have an external oil filter running into an oil cooler sitting where ever it will fit and have some benefit, does any body think this might be a problem with the by pass valve in the oil circuit or has this been done or do the supermotard guys already do just thinking out loud any thoughts.

I recently finished with a temp setup on my FE650. I've tested it out and now I am looking to do a final mounting.

I started off by buying a modified oil filter cap from HMS berg. I don't think that Peter is dealing with bergs any more. But he was selling a setup that I liked. I bought one of his last modified oil caps. Because of how the berg's oil filter is desigend. One can easily take the cap to a machine shop and have a new one cut with ports in it. Mine takes the incoming oil and pushs it though the cooler before it goes through the filter.
I used braded oil line to connect the cap to an XR400R oil cooler. I bought a use cooler off of eBay. The cooler fits tightly aound the stearing head. Make sure that you get the Honda oil lines with the cooler. Their fittings are nonUS standard. So we ended taking one of the lines and modifying it to work.
I had to buy a new head light because the old lamp would not fit back on the bike after the cooler was installed.

When I bought my bike the PO was using a high quality blend oil in it. The berg didn't like that oil at all. Then I changed to a lighter winter KTM oil and things got better. But I still had way to many problems.
Last winter I was using ighter oil in my berg. I did not yet have a fan installed. I had lots of problems when ever I slipped the clutch in the tight sections. The motor temps would spike. The bike would blow water and run very hot. Then this spring I installed a fan. I was still using the last of my lighter oil. Things were a little better but I still had problems.
I changed over to the summer 10/50 weight oil and things got much better. No more temp spiking, No more clutch slipping and chirping. I still was using the fan.
Last week I installed my cooler. The cooler is keeping the oil at a temp that I can place my bare hand on the cooler fins. I think that with the cooler, the fan, and the heaver oil I have seen the last of my clutch temp problems.
My cooler has added at most 250ccs of cap. I am thinking of DSing my 650 so I might want to add more oil capacity to it as I go. But for now things are great.

One last thing. The oil cooler idea was driven by my KTM 525 EXC. After 50 hours on the bike the valves needed adjustment almost every 20 to 30 hours. After a 100 hours on the bike. The valves needed adjustment every 10 to 20 hours. The thought was that by adding an oil cooler the valve ware would slow down. That seems not to be the case. I've put about 60 hours on my berg. I adjusted the valves when I got the bike and again last weekend. I bought the bike with 50 hours on it. The valves did not move at all. I can't say how happy I am to finally have a bike with good valves in it.

done a bit of an oil cooler test a while back if you are interested.
it definitely does work on mine, but just keep in mind that a oil cooler or radiator only really works efficiently with a reasonably amount of air passing though it,in the nitty gritty riding a radiator fan would keep the motor & oil, cooler than a oil cooler.
the oil doesn't seem to get that hot anyway, these synthetic oils are suppose to handle much higher temps, all the same it couldn't do any harm.
..weed..
