I've got an '08, and my first oil change, I didn't remove the skid plate because one of the bolts had become one with the nut, and I didn't have all night to deal with it. So, changing the oil without removing the skid plate made quite the mess. But, the location of the skid plate mounting bolts are a hassle to reach (I was finally able to cut the bad one off.)

So, on the older bikes, do you remove the skid plate before an oil change? I'm not sure what brand my plate is, but I can't believe how involved an oil change is, considering how often they are required.

A Whipps bash plate comes off, and goes back on, with a 1/4 turn Dzus type fastener, easy.

It hooks over the rear frame rail and you can see the fastener in the middle at the front.

find yourself a piece of plastic tubing about 6 inches long that will screw into the drain hole ( the filter hole is the size of a garden hose and the smaller drain can be found in any hardware store or in my case: the box with all the old pieces of tubing). lay the bike over to the left, remove the plug of choice, screw in the tubing, lean the bike to the right so that the hose drains into your pan. back to the left and kick thru or use starter a short burst to scavenge more from the crank area, drain it then back to the left and replace the plug. mess free

My skid plate is the one wif the H in the front. I just use a piece of flashing tucked under there tween the frame and cases. No mess at all. I do have a check valve on my bike so the oil comes out slow and doesn't overwhelm the tin diverter. I do have it leaning pretty deep with the bar against a post.

It drains into a 1 gallon paint bucket.

Before I installed the check valve, I just had to keep the plug near the hole for a bit to keep it from gushing out too fast.
