Gazza,

No experience yet but I've heard that they need to be serviced a lot, every 10 hrs OTTMH but worth checking out with Cramer's or someone in the know if you are keen.

I have one installed on my '09 FE450 - just did it this past weekend. I used the KTM kit and the fit was perfect. Install was pretty easy too. You do have to take the triple clamps off and replace the top bearing race with the Ohlins bracket, but not a big deal and a very clean set-up. So far I'm very happy with it.

which kit was it the SX or EXC ? I am assuming it should be the EXC '09 KTM kit

The model I ordered simply stated "Fits all full-size KTM 2005-09 off-road models". I got it online here in the US at Cyclebuy.com. The cool thing was that the guys at Cyclebuy actually called me to confirm that I was ordering for the FE450, and wanted to make certain that the KTM kit was what I really wanted, and advised if there was any fitment issue to let them know. It bolted up w/o any problems at all... So great service in terms of ensuring I knew what I was doing and that it worked out right, and a perfect fit right out of the box.

If there are two separate kits in Oz, I would probably go for the EXC version.

Hate to throw a wet rag on the fire here, but..............

It is my understanding, please correct me if I am wrong, that ohlins will not sell you a bracket kit for another bike so that you can swap the damper from one bike to another, you have to buy the mounting kit AND damper for each bike. Might want to check into that before purchase since they are considerably more expensive than the older version.

Don't know how important that is to anyone here, but, I have been using the same scotts/ohlins damper for quite a few years now with only the occasional oil change.

yeah hear what you are saying, I also have a Scotts that I have now swapped between 7 different bikes over the last 8 years, its been great.

Just had concerns now about the quality of the chinese made Scotts that are being made and sold as Ohlins no longer make them for Scotts.

Also I like the new Ohlins design so wanted to give it a go and see if its better than the Scotts that has always been the benchmark up to now.

Just wanted to clarify something here..................

All of the Scotts dampers are made here in Southern California for Scott's. No China involvement. So, if you buy a damper from Scotts, you will get the same quality if not better than your older damper. I know the newer ones had an upgrade to keep you from accidentally unscrewing the low speed adjuster too far.

Hi Bryan, can you tell me the Ohlins part # or Model # of the kit you have fitted to your bike. The Aussie importer can tehn tell me if it is an SX or EXC kit.

Thanks

There is only 1 KTM application. It is intended for installation on models with the OEM billet/CNC triple clamps, but we have installed it on a bike with the cast clamps with minimal modifications.

The KTM bar mounts that come with the cast clamp are about 10mm lower than the bar mounts that come with the billet clamp. To install the Ohlins SD 2.0 on a cast clamp, you will need to raise the bar mounts by a minimum of 3mm using a bar riser kit. The bar mounts that come with the billet clamp are separate pieces vs the one piece lower bar mounts for the cast clamp.

Additionally, the pinch bolt in the rear center of the cast clamp will need about 1mm filed off the rearmost edge to clear the upright post.

The Ohlins SD 2.0 can be used with either the 18mm or 20mm offset position and allows use of all 4 bar positions. Hope this helps.

Hey Gazza, I don't have the Ohlins PN#, but when I boiught the setup from CycleBuy, it was simple noted as the 'Ohlins 2.0 Steering Damper, Fits all full-size KTM 2005-09 off-road models". Maybe Bob R. from CycleBuy can give you and exact PN#. As I said, he followed up when I ordered it to make sure I knew what I was up to, and it was greatly appreciated!

Also, as mentioned before, with the new '09 berg, it was a pure "out of the box bolt on" application since the FE has the CNC clamps. It is an easy deal.

Sorry I don't have more for you regarding actual PN#.

Have one of these fitted to my YZ250F don't think it needs servicing every 10hours more like 100hours or once a year. Where i found it worked best was riding on hard ground you can sit on the bike anyway you want and it keeps the bike under control. Also it makes backing the bike in super easy on the dirt as it stops the back slapping around on bumps.

Guys quick question on Scotts dampers. I have a std mount as opposed to a sub mount unit from my Gasser 300, that i would like to transfer to a new 570. Are the actual damper bodies the same, whether std mount or sub mount? Do i just need to buy a KTM sub mount kit as discussed above and it will all fit? For some reason i thought the body fitted the opposite way round on the sub mount.

I've got one on my 570.

as others have said, installs very easily.

As a follow up to Dales point about fitting multiple bikes above

I've been playing with the idea of a damper - have previously run one on my KTM's - rang the UK Ohlins importer who quoted me £477 for the Husaberg fitment.

I asked if i could just buy a fitting kit if i changed bikes and they replied that each damper was bike specific. that was all i could get out of them, even when i asked if i could buy a mounting kit by itself they said "each damper is bike specific"

Now i can't believe that they have made a completely different damper for each machine and its gotta be just a case of getting the right fitting kit so i'm going to email Ohlins to try and get an answer.

as I understand it the damper becomes/replaces part of the top headstock bearing

same headstock bearing with same tripples and headstock dimensions should interchange

yep, have had a look at images of the fitting kits and cant see any reason that would stop you from just buying the correct fitting kit for your bike then transfering the damper across.

quite a innovative way of mounting a damper really.

but cant see them selling many if you have to buy a whole new damper for each bike rather than just the fitting kit.

The reply from Ohlins is;

Dear Fraser,

Thank you for your message in relation to an Ohlins steering damper.

I can confirm that our MX dampers are supplied per application due to the fact that it is a rotary damper and fits beneath the handle bars.

Kind regards,

Chris Witter

Bit of a shame as i'd of had one if i could have just swapped it between bikes with the appropriate fittign kit.

Installing an Ohlins steering damper and I did not want to damage the OEM race so if you got here via search here is my tip for you. If you have a steering lock (street) model you are not going to get a proper driver in the head tube. Get one of those air duster cans for pc keyboards. Turn it upside down and it becomes a freon freeze spray. Use a gear puller while cooling the race with that spray worked for me. When installing the Ohlins race you can heat the head tube with a heat gun, freon spray the Ohlins part and then a piece of wood over the part to protect while you drive it in with the proper alignment.
