ok bike has not been started for about a week went in to garage took the cover off wheeled it out in to the driveway went for the button it barely turned over ok no problems flat battery pretty normal ...!
so i went to kick it got it up to tdc gave a big kick and it back fired like a bitch and now it has no compression and i think the starter motor wont disengage or something ..? ok so this whats happening you kick it and makes a bad noise and i can feel the starter motor turning could this be caused by the flat battery ..?and there is alot of resistance but im amagining that im probly turning the starter motor over faster than it usually would go yeah any please tell me how to fix my bike

cheers doug

My guess is the starter sprag grenaded. It is common on the older bikes for them to go south after a backfire. The parts are not that expensive but I believe the cases will have to be split. :(

ok um ****...!whats a starter sprag what does it do and cant i just take the starter motor out..?

ok after a bit more investergating i took out the little reduction gear on the side of the motor for the starter motor and it feels normal when i kick it over ...! ok im guessing the starter sprag is the one way clutch for the starter motor yes..? if this is the case is it safe to pull the reduction gear out and just run it like that or will this cause further damage :eg bits flying around the motor ..? if so i will run i in fc guise until i pull it apart was going to do rings soon any way any help is much appreciated as when i rang my local dealer the mechanics response was and i quote "mate you probly know just as much as us about them "

Is your's pre or post 2001? My old job did exactly the same as you said - I had a flat battery & the starter locked engaged after I stopped the engine. I took out the starter transfer gear & rode it anyway. When I got back I put the gear back in & it worked OK! There was no metal on the oil screen.

It has locked a couple of times since, but the first kick the engine gives on starting seems to unlock it. I realise I'll eventually have to fix the sprag, but hopefully not too soon.

yeah its a 99 fe 600 so your saying its ok to run it with out the reduction gear there sweet im goin riding this weekend oh yeah

Just make sure the sprag did not come apart. You don't waant to spread debris through the motor.

Totally agree with Berger. I only took my bike out cause I had the ***** & needed to blow off steam, but I kept an ear out & checked the screen on returning. Since we've done a couple of rides I'm now reasonably confident to use it as is. What is probably happening is the sprags &/or races are worn & some are going over centre. I think it is unlikely anything will be broken, but don't rule it out.

There was a bit of discussion on this problem here: http://www.husaberg.org/modules.php?nam ... opic&t=450

Just remember that if anything does come adrift in the sprag then the bits will end up in the crankcase under the piston. The only ways out are thru the oil reed valve into the transmission & hopefully the oil screen (best case), punched out thru the side of the engine case (not the worst) or out the exhaust port (I shudder to think!).

update:eek:k i took the starter reduction gear out and started it put a screw driver up to the motor and sounds fine bit worried tho it started first kick :? took it for a lap around the block runs fine i dont know whether its me or what but when im kicking it it feels like there is no compresion but seems to still go plenty hard lifting the front wheel in 4th no worries :? is there some sort of auto decomp attached to this starter clutch
thanks for you help guys oh buy the way the new clutch is 49 dollars gasket set is $249 and ring set is $150 does that sound about right
