I'm looking for a new bike to take me for some fully loaded travelling and can't decide what to get. I'm planning to take it to Newfoundland this summer and many other trips in the future. No single track but pavement and dirt roads. I know the KLR is prolly the best choice for budget minded person but I don't know if I can stomach it. Especially since I'm use to riding the best damn bike available now. The KLR is a tank, I don't have a BMW or Husky dealer close buy (2-300k). The DR650 is nice but it doesn't have a lot of aftermarket support.
What else is out there that you might recommend?
XRL?

Anyone else in a similar situation?

saw a guy take a 640 Adventurer thru some pretty tough trails in a Dual Sport ride. The guy was a brute! It was only a 30 mile loop but he rode it down from Wisconsin rode 2 laps and then rode it home. Seems like the way to go.

I have considered KTM 640 but they are few and far between around here.
Having said that, the new 690 super enduro looks great. Maybe not practical for what I need but it's nice to look.

If it's reliability and availability of parts and after market stuff then I think the XRL would be the choice. They're not as much of a tank as a KLR, and they have a pretty good rep. I know a couple of guys who have them for dual sport and have found them to be very reliable.

There is a fair amount of things you might want to do for an XRL to make it run better and cooler. I think they change out the intake manifold and rejet the carb, and put on a higher pressure radiator cap.

I have thought about having a bike to do some road trips on and have considered several bikes. There are web sites about adventure touring on the net, try this one to start

There's a fair amount of real world stuff on this site. I haven't checked it out too thoroughly, just read the post about the guy on the husky going through death valley http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286941

Best of luck!

I was in similar situation few years ago. KTM 640 Adventure was very good solution.
25000 trouble free km`s in two years.
Take a look - pictured somewhere in Bosnia ...

Goran,

If I could find that exact bike, used and in my price range, I would snatch that up in a second.
WOW, that is a nice bike.

Oh man, you're killing me. That is one sexy bike.

This is my second favorite site but only because dualsport.ca is my baby.

Hi Kelsow,

hope you´re not killing me for my advice:
but older BMW´s (R80 and younger) is a highly recommeded bike for "Globetrotters";
ton´s of aftermarket parts available,(At least in Europe) very, very low-tech -> easy to maintain or repair...

Would you be very surprised to see - in near future - Husabergs with LC4 engine?

How about a beemer? You mention no dealer nearby but is that a deal breaker? An older GS650 or GS1100 would do a fine job of highway cruising and dirt road sliding. Good luggage capacity and reliability shouldn't be too much of an issue. Probably come well kitted for distance.

Yes I have a GS(1150) but they really are good bikes too.

I wouldn't mind an R80 or GS whatever but those are really rare around here.
The GS would prolly be way out of my price range, unfortunately.
If I can't find a 640, I guess I'll have to settle for some of the less cool options.

NSMAN, any ideas? I wonder if Joseph still has his 01?

I think the LC4 motor in Husaberg may be a reality, sooner than we think!!!!it will just have "Husaberg" written on it!!! But I sign up to all conspiracy theories!!!
