Had a sidecar crosser in last week. Bloke had been pressing that button till his finger fell off!

I had previously done a shed load of work to it and he reported back happy that it started first time everytime etc blah! blah!

however it wouldn't start at one meeting and when i got it it made a dreadful racket. I rebuilt the engine which is what it was in for and then when i tried to start it it made a noise i don't hear to often.

It would wind over and almost bounce and then wind again and bounce and wind again. I didn't know it was bouncing but you could hear a cl - ck - cl - ck - cl - ck (turn and bounce, turn and bounce).

my minds i saw it all - i had this vision of a gear bouncing on the teeth of the next gear. so i pulled the left cover and decided to replace the shell bearings for the sprague in both the engine and the sidecover. a ******* to do but the upshot was silky smooth spinning of the motor and it started straight away.

So replacing those bearings is another thing to think about if the engine is hard to start on the magic button?

the noise is more like someone typing on an old typwriter and then slapping 'the bar' to go down a page.

cha, cha, cha, cha.....cla, cla, cla......cha, cha, cha, cha............cla, cla, cla

Early 250cc Suzuki quad runners made that noise just before they snapped the idler gear post off crankcase. Their problem was as the idler gear would try to climb over the top of the sprag gear as the bushes/bearings got too worn from reapeted starts due to worn carb needles (they would stop at every farm gate). But i digress.
