Ok so i have an 06 FE 450 and love the hell out of it, wouldn't ride/race anything else in the woods/ desert. so with that out of the way...

I am looking to buy a used MX bike. i am going to spend around 2k. i am looking at 4 bikes- cr250, crf450, yz 250, yz400/426. at least that is what comes up with in the price range i am looking.

why you ask, well i got talked into riding Mountain view MX track here in Sandy Oregon and loved it! but i strongly believe(and i'm sure you'll tel me if i'm wrong) that the berg is desinged to ride GP's and goat trails, and not to do 40 foot doubles and table tops.

I don't plan to race real hard, more just for fun and all the practice days.

my questions, between the 250 and 450 will i be unhappy with the 250's power delivery?

will the 250's really be that much lighter than the 450's. and are the 250's as easy to ride. i had not ridden track in almost 5 years and was doing the 40 foot doubles and table tops by the end of the day.

Me, i have been riding for 12 years and i'm 23. i have ridin trails mainly. i have owned a ktm 300 for 5 years 450 for 1.5 years, and a wr 200 for 2 years.

i'm sure i'm missin somethin

If you are just doing it for fun then why not use the berg?
You would save 2K and if you get more serious about it later you could put that 2k into the suspension or any other mods that you wanted.

you have a 4 stroke already , go for the 2 stroke .

something different and easy to rebuild , the time is coming when the authorities will attempt to outlaw these weapons .

the 250's are well developed and in the right hands will kick butt .

just my humble opinion .

I think you're wrong......the husaberg is awesome MX track bike(specially a 450,a 650 might be a bit much).....with a couple of setting on suspension, etc it will 40 doubles and table tops....better than a girly japbike.......SOOOOOO, I personally would NOT get a yamaha or kawasaki to do tracks......like on TV. Husaberg is Perfect....will smoke a KX450,CR450 and 450 out there.

too answer you're question
The big differnce is 250 mx bikes are 2 strokes, and 450's are 4-stroke..... you get a 250 4-stroke.....but you'll get tired and bored with that quickly!!!
a 250 - 2stroke has got the mystical BANG of the line ....and revs real fast real high.......Screaming!!!
a 450 - 4stroke has all the torque, smoother....but a smoother powerband, and powerful as hell!!

a 250 2-stroke is Black Metal and a 450 4stroke is Death Metal!!!!

So, technically a 2-stroke 250 and a 4stroke 450 are about the same, you get your kicks in different ways,....but kicks none the less!!!!!
So the answer is No you won't get bored with a 250 2-strokes power delivery, but you will get sick of a 250 4-strokes power delivery!

BUT STICK TO THE HUSABERG!!!! I WOULD!

he is sticking with the husaberg , and as the question states he is looking for a used MX bike

I thinik Whosaberg is right on here, two strokes can be dialed in for great power delivery and are much cheaper to re-build and/ or hotrod. Check a couple issues back in Dirt Rider they did an article called Buck 25 it's about buying older 125's, but the direction of the article might give you some insights

any uja (universal japanese appliance)250 smoker. a brand that you have easy access to parts. have a ball

Lubbz i am racing my Berg in as many GP's as i can enter this year and i would rather not have to set up my suspension every other day. i would like to hit some of the mid week practice sessions and still do the GP's on the weekends. now don't get me wrong, if i could afford the non e-start berg as a second bike then i would in a hart beat, i loved passing guys on purpose built MXers, with my Euro machine- its very sobering to them.......

I also want to get a little lighter bike for the track as it is new to me and i figure i lighter bike would be more forgiving to the mistakes i am going to make.

my real Q is which of those four i mentioned are worth a buying

Ive heard the crf450(03) are valve eaters, and th cr250s vibrate real bad due to the new aluminum frame. and the yz426 seem to want to loop out on jumps.

i have yet to hear much bad about the yz 250 and thats the bike i'm leaning towards, i just wanted some first hand info on those bikes.

thanks so far for everything

Tin, Nopersonal expierience but alot of fast guys set the YZ 250's up for offroad and WORCS type events. I don't think you can go wrong there, lots of used ones around with lots of set up info and parts available. With a little work on pipe and tuning the power band can be fattened up for a little more grunt off the bottom. Good Luck ! sounds like you are havin fun.

Ok, This is personally now, if I was in your situation.
I would avoid a $2K MX fourstroke unless it has been owned by someone I know. A new top end could cost that much if you get a bad one.
Personally I like the 4T's better than the 2T's, but for the money and reliability you can not go wrong with a good old 2T.
YZ250's are GREAT bikes, very tunable to the riding you want to do.
In my area I would go with a CR250 just because you can't throw a rock without hitting a Honda dealership.

ron & mud, thanks that what i'm lookin for! i'm havin a ton of fun lately, single and really have nothin to do other than ride and work(in that order ;)

but i think that mud said it about the 4t service is true, i'm super anal about mine(every ride no matter how long) i change oil and clean filter wash and repeat.

the yz sounds like the way to go, i have a yami dealer just around the corner that i'm good friends with.

thank you for all the input, anymore is always welcome for the next buyer too

I'd say obviously keep your Husaberg but buy a good used 250 for the tracks. I picked up a cr250 to fix and sell (it was a great deal) but after a test ride before putting it up for sale, I decided to keep it because it is an enormous amount of fun to ride on the track. I've got my Husaberg set up with offroad suspension, and now keep a 250 with track suspension.
