Can anyone help!

My 650 had a little rattle when i bought it (cheap luckily!) and is now getting worse. Ive posted a clip on youtube and the link is below...is the noise familiar to anyone? It sounds as though it is coming roughly from the area of the electric start and gears but i could be wrong. Ive had the side casing off and cant see anything obviously wrong, but maybe i need to delve a little further. Im afraid it is a phone video, so the sound isnt great.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help,

Andy

I would check your valve clearances first. They are not the quietest engines in the world at the best of times but if your clearance is to great then it's worse. While your there check cam follower bearings, they make a hell of a noise when they're worn or collapsed but amazingly the bike will still run and even tick over.

Hi,

yes i have read about the problems with the top end, although the noise is definately under the left side casing somewhere rather that at the top. The other thing i completely forgot to mention is it is smoking at idle and when blipping the throttle, but not when holding a steady raised revs. Its definately oil smoke, and smokes especially when cold, less when hot but still noticeable.

probably camchain. the smoke? rings and linar i should think. either way. £800 rebuild time. of course you could leave it and hope...

I would be surprised if its the camchain (bike has done just under 10 hours) but not impossible i suppose, although it does sound as if the clatter is coming from further back. Rings and liner is what i feared. Oh well, time to pull it out, didnt have time at the weekend (it was me that emailed you on ebay last week) I'll get it apart and see whats up. I would hope it isnt going to be £800 though!

Thanks,

Andy

shouldnt be if your doin it yourself, as your pulling it apart your obviously happy to get dirty.

some of the former husaberg dealers still hold quite a few spares and i've had some good prices from em when i did my rings and clutch basket end of last year.

sounds a lot like my 650 and i'm not worried about it. as taffy indicated, cam chain tension should be checked. yours appears to be an '03 (you should include the model and year in your signature so as to keep people from guessing) and if i'm not mistaken there is a newer style tensioner blade available.
another source for the oil smoke is valve guides/ seals, which will give you the symptoms you describe

would you agree though ned that VGOS are normally really good on the husaberg?

i dunno taf, prolly not bad, but last year i was looking inside my 650 spark plug hole with a fiberscope (bronchoscope left over from my medical days) and saw an alarming huge dark area on the left side of my cylinder 8O. i was freakin thinking i was eating the liner. went in for a closeup and saw it was only oil running down from the downhill valve guide. prolly to keep the rings from rusting.

if you're gonna stop the rings from rustin you can't afford to stand still - especially at your age! LOL!!!

I should update this thread just to give a bit more info for anyone searching the same problem. I took the side casing back off and went over everything properly as last time i was in a hurry (!) and discovered the nut holding the main gear on the end of the crank was loose, not much but i cleaned and loctite'd it, and now she runs smooth as silk! Totally different bike
