Hi,

Can you maybe recognize the noise from left cover in video.
It's always the same, in neutral or in gear, with clutch pulled in or with clutch out.
Should I be worried about?

I only have limited experience with the 70 degree but that does not sound right to me either. What does the oil look like when you drain it? Not a reciprocating noise so it must be something to do with the crank. sorry not much help.

Your going to have to do some digging Pull the clutch cover and check the crank drive and balance drive gear nuts.

I had the crank drive gear nut come loose cause this noise

[youtube:3g95zvwk]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09yQFPf-SI4[/youtube:3g95zvwk]

The 03 and older Bergs had issues with the cam bearings also flying apart I wold pull the rockers and look there also. If you havent already done so you should also update your cam chain and all that stuff

Pay close attention to the drive gears I had to pull my clutch basket to see the gear on the crank was loose if you dont it may not be easily detecable as everything will apear nice and tight

ya you should check all the items mentioned. it's part of knowing yer bike. but it sounds like a normal husaberg with a high idle to me.

Tnx for your aswers.

Oil looks fine when draining it.

I was thinking definitly to get left cover off, but didn't know what to look for.
Is there anything else to look for, except the crank, balancer nuts?

I must say that I prefer your answer ned :) hope it's a normal husaberg sound.
Actually it sounds like this since I buy it, but there isn't either one Husaberg in my neighborhood to compare it.

lol the first time I heard a burg, I thought Man, they sound wicked.

As mentioned above, it sounds normal to me. If you screw your idle down some, You'll prob find that 'whine' sound to be a lot loader.

The sound is from Husaberg cutting friction-loss from using Heli-coil cut gears. (as every Jap bike uses)
Strait cut gears, as you'll find in the gear box, Are less prone to noise due to the oil bath they sit in.

Race cars be comparison use gear box's with Strait cut gears (if allowed, Hollinger is a good example) as apposed to factory Heli cut gears to reduce noise.

(less friction = more crank shaft power) Just another sample of Where the Swedes where thinking outside the Conventional box to achieve what the bike was designed for.

Lets pray one day they come back into the game, Once again taking back what the Austrians are killing off!

Sorry for stealing this topic but it looks like we have the same problem in hands.

Bought a FS 550e from 2007 about 2 months ago with 2500km on it. The previous owner was careful enough for the bike to be still new and shining.

It has now around 2800—3000km.
One day I went to see the oil level (without reading anything about it before , I now know that I shouldn't have added any oil) and saw the oil level very low. Just put some more oil in until it was like at 2/3 of the viewfinder/screen. I have no ideia if the noise comes from oil excess, but that was the only thing I've done to it.

Next day I went for a ride, everything was fine. After riding for about 50km I noticed a weird sound and terrible shaking. It almost felt like someone was hitting the foot pegs with a hammer.

I pulled over:

Some other videos covering a very identical noise:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN6gPEnuhxs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha8vHgWkAMM

The noise remains the same wether I pull the clutch in or out, any gear or neutral. It doesn't seem to loose power (I actually had to ride another 50km back home and didn't notice anything else other than the noise and shaking).

What should I look for?
Is it rod bearings?

Any help is appreciated please.

first thing to do is pull the top cover and examine the cam follower bearings as well as the bearings at both ends of the cam. the cfb's will exhibit vertical play when worn out and the cam bearings will lose balls (which will need to be retrieved). both will make the noise you have.

I'm a completely noob and I'm probably not doing it myself but can you be a little more specific on this? Where is that top cover?

Cam cover I guess.

on the top
although pic is an earlier engine than yours: your water pump is on the crank.

What could have lead to these bearings problem?

01-03 ate cam bearings. Its not a matter of if but when Check out the owner docs.

Youll also see most the early valve train isnt the best and is prone to fail. Upgrade it now before you have to.

What could have lead to these bearings problem?
what causes an old man to wear out? what causes wheel bearings to go bad? things that move tend to wear out parts. i'm not saying your bike has these problems, but part of the maintenance scheme of ownership is your responsibility to examine this stuff on occasion.
the engines after 03 didn't have such a radical cam slope and had less problems with cfb's, but things still wear out.

Thanks alot for all the info. I think I've found the right person (local KTM mechanic) to inspect what's wrong with my baby.

Let's make an update here.

I don't have the bike yet, but it's on its way. One more week or so and it will be rolling again!

So the mechanic went ahead and took the engine out and opened the hell out of it, everything exposed. The damage at this point was very clear, but the cause of it is more interesting. According to his words, a metal piece (that looks like a ring, a very fragile one) from the crankshaft broke into the crankshaft bearing on the left side of the engine — hence the higher noise on the left side.

Here's a pic of that bearing (not mine):

That metal piece from the crankshaft just got on the way of this bearing, broke that plastic ring around the bearing (why the hell is this made of plastic anyway?), pieces of the bearing went loose, most of them weren't even there. Metal pieces all over that got into the piston and cylinder action which got scratched on a small portion.

The mechanic made a list of all the pieces he's going to need and it's almost 1000€. That includes new cylinder, new piston and his labor time.

Well ahead of what I was expecting, but other than that, everything was completely new inside the engine, so I don't expect anything that expensive anytime soon.

I'm now waiting for it... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Have you seen these broken/ Damaged parts in person? Or taking the word of the mechanic?
Just asking.

I cant say what material would have been used for fact. But I don't know any engine other then Intake manifolds or the odd Spacer for a low load spring etc used "Inside" any engine.
Then its a Composite material. Resin and fibers from Alloys, Bronze etc metals.. Its light weight and strong to a degree.

Magnesium is also "Cast", very light weight. Albeit expensive.

Many metals can be mixed for particular applications.
I couldn't see any bearing manufacturer (suggesting) using a composite in a High Load application, which the crank is.
At least not back then.

If that "Keeper" ring failed, Then your bearing is going to fall apart pretty soon.
