Yup, another 501 that doesn't feel like starting :( .
I hope for some input/confirm my thoughts from the electrical masters here. I'm the original owner of a 2000 FE501E. I had a weak spark issue with this bike 4-5 years ago...a new coil (motoexotic supplied) cured the problem. This past weekend's ride the bike was running great. It started many times without an issue...both kick and electric. Ran a little rich (reading plug..and feel...could be symptons of weak spark in hindsight). It was washed...ridden again gently to dry it off..then pop....it stopped. With difficulty, it started though it wouldn't run at idle. Nothing seemed to make it better...it felt and sounded super rich along wth a partially plugged pilot if you can imagine that. Of course, everything was cleaned out and inspected looking for water...or anything else. None to be found. Carb clean inside ,along with all jets, stator cover dry inside, valve adjustment just for fun (they were fine). Yes I still have a spark (new plug, out of the head).
I think I know now why it pops and spits backwards...or pops and kicks me in the foot...I didn't realize until now that it fires the plug every revolution. I thought the ignition box was bad and firing the plug off at the wrong time. Now I think it's just not firing off under compression pressure...but firing with the valves opening..causing a pop but no run with residual fuel. Oh yes...good battery with it's own optimate charger, all up to spec.
Once home I checked the site and got the specs for the stator. My original stator (yup..might be lucky all this time), Red - Black 2368 ohms. Trigger...163.5 ohm (forget those colours). It was 13C outside. So...what do you guys think. Weak stator?...is there such a thing? I know it doesn't meet the spec of 3000 ohm =/- 10% but was it too cold to make it? Should I be looking somewhere else since I do have an actual spark? I haven't done a spark jump test yet though I have the tool. How far should it be able to jump?

RE: No start

hi mate sounds like the stator to me mine went the same about 3 weeks ago i got a rewound stator from dcr and its great theres a good lad on here called taffy ask him he knows all and also will sell you a stator i think the spark should jump about 10 to 12 mm mine does probably more .

Hi Andrew,

And welcome to the UHE, you will find a lot of info in the Doc regarding starting problems, but from the reading you have got from your stator that is a 100% duffer.

I can offer you my services here to rewind it, or Taffy or Dan at Motoxotica stocks my rewound units.

The spark jump test is a good indication of what state your stator is in, 10 to 12mm on a normal kick, if it sparks intermittent or you find you have to close up the air gap this is a sure sign the stator has had it's day.

Oh and Emo glad my rewound unit is treating you well.

Regards

Sparks.

Sparks...I'll try a spark jump test today. I'm expecting it to fail, or give me a low distance. It sounds like you have all the continents covered with your rewound units. I've read about yours...double dipped wire and all...and the perfect track record you seem to have. Taffy is in the UK...Dan in the US (which is closer to me)....Would I be purchasing a "Sparks" rewound stator from Dan...that includes your double dipped wire? I don't want to purchase a stock SEM if they still exist when you can create a better than new unit.

Have a look at my posts - did everything but the stator.... Turned out to be the stator. Haven't looked back yet but I'm sure all the other tweaks help too - you know..valves - dutch clog - jetting blah blah...good luck.

PS yeah jump test. I always thought the berg had a weak spark as that was all I'd ever seen hence not replacing the stator......oh nooo.

PPS Got my Stator off Taffy.

I didn't do the spark jump test. I decided I should check everything over again and found a broken valve spring. Not something I want to have drop the retainer. Lucky for me..no contact made with the piston. Lucky I guess. Sorry, no photos here...they are still in the camera.
So now I need a stator and valve springs. Better figure out which ones I should put in. I'm sure there are better ones.

Hi Andrew,

Yes the stators that Dan stocks are rewound by me, regarding your valve springs get in touch with Taffy he stocks the dual valve spring kit.

Steve.
