I come from a sunday ride and park the dirty bike in garage... i don't look at it for 2 days and today i wash it, clean the filter, grease bearings and stuff like that.
Than i try to fire it up and it doesen't starts... my buddy pushes me around to bump start it but not a single sign from engine.

I disconect the spark cable from the plug cap and there is no spark...

What the **** could happen with bike that sits 2 days and nobody even looks at it???

I just put Electrex ignition in there and bike worked great for 10 hours and today it's dead...

I remember when i was finished washing the bike today i removed the ignition cover of and blowed the ignition with air to make sure that there is no water in there, there was maybe a drop of water nothing more.
And when i was putting back the cover i accidentaly touched the battery wire connection with the cover and it sparked. Could something happen when i did that?

I measured the resistances and they are okay so stator is propably not the reason.
How can i check if CDI and coil are alright?

There are no tests for the coil / cdi unit that I know of. If everything else tests O.K. then swapping with someone elses CDI for a test is much cheaper than purchasing a new one. A rebuilt one can be purchased from Taffmeisters.

You probably don't want to hear this but the electrex stator has be reported by some to damage the CDI unit. The consensus is to have the original stator rewound buy U.K. Motoplat (Taffmeisters stocks these also).

I would check and clean all the wiring, especially the ground wires from the stator, cdi and regulator rectifier first.

Read this.

Hello.
Know i have read about it somewhere, here is the link.
Hope it is not the CDI, but if it is then there is hope since Taffy have connections that repairs them.
Spray the stator with electronicspray to get the water out, after a ride i allways open the statorcover to dry it if there is moisture there.

RE: Read this.

I would check the obvious things, like disconnect orange wire, in case if the kill swith or ignition swith has got short circuit to ground. Then, check all the wire terminalls, connections.Regulator rectifier is ratcher up for charging the battery, got no connection with spark trigging.
Check resistances- you'll find lotts of usefull topics around the forum.
If you come to the point that resistances in stator are OK, connections are dry, then try to swap with borrowed CDI unit(if you got somebody to borrow from)

Hi Viktor,

Since you had no ignition before you started pulling it apart, shorting the battery cable on the engine won't have caused any damage, the problem was there before that happened.

But if you put the bike away in a running condition I would say either a bad connection or the stator has gone **** up.

Can you quote me the resistance figures you got when you tested it?.

Failing that you could always send the stator and CDI over to me and I can run it up on the test rig, I'd only charge you the shipping costs.

Regards

Sparks.

RE: Re: No spark AGAIN???

i destroyed a battery last year when i lost control of the positive wire and it touched the frame. check your battery is at least alive by putting a little bulb across the terminals or a worklight etc.

You got me wrong, i washed the bike and without checking for spark i removed the cover to spray the water out of stator, and than i touched the battery cable with cover so that was before i checked for spark.

Resistances i got were in specs, 3k ohms between red-black and i think somewhere around 160-170 between green-black. I also put a finger between 2 wires and it shocked me decently so stator is fine :p

I also checked connections, disc. orange wire etc. but still no spark. I'll check them again today.

If CDI or coil has gone what is the cheapest solution out there?

But what bothers me is that bike was runing great on 4 hour ride, i parked it in garage, it worked on idle for a few seconds, i killed it with killswitch and next day no spark... i mean what the hell? Can a CDI or coil just go in this way?

RE: Re: No spark AGAIN???

this happened to me 3 times!!! (i am on my 4th cdi- 02 501) this was with the sem stator. happened the same every time--working on the eng. starting it and shutting it off--then no spark on restart. 5 quick starts on a new cdi/coil and boom!!! no spark. and i will ask again , can a stator blow a cdi/coil??

RE: Re: No spark AGAIN???

bergman

i have a man who reconditions them and can make them better than new. he says that he does a mod so that the surge of voltage found on the electrex stators doesn't damage the cdi. maybe that's the problem, you have a rare SEM that doesn't have a voltage regulator/doesn't work?

either way, let me know, i'm looking for knackered cdi units to get repaired and to stock up so maybe you can PM me.

RE: Re: No spark AGAIN???

If none of the above basic suggestions work, and if you desperately want to test your cdi unit then make the default connections thorougly other than the wires coming from stator(red black and green).next, connect 100 to 300V between black and red with the red being the + polarity and then disconnect and right after connect 10v-20v source between black and green(green +polarity). This should work.Try a few times until you see the spark. If you can't find 100V source then rectify your wall outlet and use it.Of course do this testing only if you have the basic understanding of electric circuits :) this is the test for fun :) other testing methods are of course avaliable but they are complicated to explain here. All ignition system and the electronics behind is very simple but if you are not experienced then wish you good luck buddy..

RE: Re: No spark AGAIN???

a milder test: connect 12 or 24 v or something more than 12v with a series resistor(resistor between red and +source) between black and red(red is+).there should be a momentary current flow and it should gradually decrease until it stops after a while depending on the resistor value chosen. (you can use 1K resistor).a little leakage current may be flow then.use a meter and watch for voltage increase between red and black.then apply 10v or something else between green and black(green +) momentarily and then disonnect 10v from green.after that you should see current flowing continuously between red and black.if you have access to an osciloscope watch for spark signal at the spark plug cable.(dont apply more than 6v to the unit in this case).or get a help from an experienced person.good luck.

I know this probably sounds dumb but when you wash your bike, always fire it up straight after & get it hot before putting it away. This allows the radiant heat to get rid of any water that doesn't drain away & lets you know right then & there that it's still going. I take mine for a ride so when I re-lube the chain it's hot so the lube sticks & cooks onto the chain. Just my 2 bobs worth...

What do you think. Will this unit fit my bike?

this is a just a coil.As far as I can see, it does not have an embedded cdi unit.If it does not have a cdi unit then it is very expensive.Constructing an analog cdi unit is very easy but only for an electronics engineer or like:) you have to take into account that there is two ignition trigger signals separated 60degrees from each other(there is two magnets for ignition for sem).If you have an experienced electronics engineer friend or like, I can supply information about the circuit.

This unit is not just a coil. It is writen with big letters in orange field "HTCDI - Combination HT & CDI Coil" so i guess it has embedded CDI unit in there. :D

What do you think about that unit? Can CDI and coil be made to fit many bikes? I'm somewhat suspicious about that but it is for single cylinder bike, 4 stroke and it looks pretty much the same as SEM unit, wires are identical and i think it may fit.

I sent 3 mails to Electrex and they didn't answer... it is strange because when i was buying stator they replied in few hours...

I have updated my stator and cdi I had weak spark with new stator and old sem cdi. I put new cdi and coil from HPI and can't get spark idk what to do.
