I've heard a number of times about installing fans so our bikes don't overheat. I just thought I'd mention that my 05 650 has never had this problem. I've ridden many times in over 100 degrees and really getting on it. I have only had the usual loss of a couple of ounces of fluid, never overheating. Maybe all that air rushing by as i'm rippin down the trail keeps it cool. Even in the tights i got no problem and if im going to stop for a while, I shut it off.

hmmm...well, I just ordered the optional cooling fan for my climate, which seems close to yours. Just the "better safe than sorry" factor, in this case I suppose.

My '05 650 hasn't burped up a drop after installing the Boss/clarke tank. It puked up a few times with the stocker, never actually overheated. I rode in 107 degrees last weekend, just around town and even had to sit at a few lights for a spell, no problem. I bought a fan from Motoxotica, but have not seen the need to install it yet.

I suspect it's all about how fast you're going to get air flow over the rad, rather than the ambient temperature.

Took my new 550 through tight single track yesterday and it boiled over twice. Temperature outside was...maybe...75F. Same thing happened to a buddy on his 450 Berg. IMO...for that type of woods riding the fan looks to me like it is a "must do."

have you checked the fit of the rad cap asper the docand as per Per (viking!).

Rad cap fits and seems to seal fine. No interference with the overflow hose nipple like noted in Viking's post.

Things were exacerbated (a bad habit of mine ) by stopping and waiting for a couple of slower mates who were lagging behind. I sat there idling for a minute or so and the pressure relief (cap) opened up for maybe a couple of seconds then closed again. Headed for the nearest trail intersection and went for a toot down some double track to cool her down again.

Refilled the rad when I got home...probably only lost about 250ml. Stopped by the hardware store yesterday and bought a plastic bottle for $0.50...home made rad overflow bottle coming up shortly...followed by fan kit.

y experience is that once they start to go they have gone.....

new headgasket and nothing else will do. remember that keiran fromn the IoM l;ast summer? one good boil and then one after another and for ever more....
