hi everyone, i have owned my SM converted 501 FE for a year now and have done most of the maintenance myself and i enjoy every minute of it, by the end of this summer my engine will be due another rebuild. could anyone out there tell me whether a newer (maybe '05) 550 engine would fit straight in my '03 bike?? if so where could i get a good one and how much would it cost? i live in the south west of england and would like to meet other 'berg enthusiasts!!
regards, Ben

whato ben

welcome to UHE fella!

why don't you put tyour location (can we narrow you down to a town somewhere, after all you do want to meet fellow bergites! we have a small UK ride down in portsmouth in october coming up. just put scouser in a search and then when you find any message, hit profile and in profile see all messages and then you'll get back to one that is called UK ride or similar.

just not worth buying a new engine mate. 100% rebuild the old one nicely and you'll have a lovely bike. can go to 550 but the 501 was the sweetest ever!

i would try and get every upgrade going, and a cam, and the dual valves, and and and keihin carb and quite honestly i'd then take it to bed with me!

you'll know that trevor poppe at portsmouth and mid west at melksham can do the job for you as well as gary grover in newbridge, ss motors of shrewsbury, DCR in preston and me in east anglia.

thanks for the reply taffy! i live in taunton, somerset. i had my engine rebuilt by dave clarke in november last year, came back all lovely and going like a trooper! he said in an ideal world it would need a freshen up every year but only 6 months later and under 500 miles i have an oil leak, quite a bad one and after investigation it looks like its coming from the head gasket! i'm not 100% sure that's where it's coming from but it's defo not from the rocker covers! i've got quite a few mods... 6pot beringer, trick forks, gpr damper and the like but an akropovic silencer is the only 'engine' mod i have done at the mo and she quite happily overtakes my mates KTM 625smr which i'm pretty happy about but last week after looking at e few race bikes i decided to drill my seat (nicely) to allow better air flow into the filter, now she hesitates and pops and bangs loads! do i need to richen the mixture to compensate? if so how?
regards, Ben

try adjusting the air screw in the side of the carb and if that doesn't do it you need to possibly lower or raise the needle? tough one to call.

you only need a headgasket at worst for your bike. the other place it comes from is the rocker cover spigot or a split breather tube.

thanks taffy... after adjusting the air screw all the hesitating and popping has stopped! i also had a good look at the oil leak to find a crack in the rocker cover! all sorted now though! i can honestly say right now (touch wood) there is absolutely nothing wrong with my 'berg!! awsome!!
