Hi just bought my first husenberg, think its 2001 fe400, took it for its first ride all fine then on the way back, it developed a knocking noise sounds like its coming from top end, no loss of compression and still rides ok, has anyone got any ideas what it may be thanks.

welcome mate to UHE!

unlucky start by the sound of it. 95% of problems can be found in the head. suggest that you pull the rocker inspection covers off and start it and listen for noises. check that you haven't lost a tappet nut or that a cam bearing hasn't collapsed (by trying to wiggle the cam and see if its loose).

pull the cam chain tensioner and see if there is any travel left. there is just sooo much we could tell you of. please go fill your head with stuff out of the doc. left of screen.

sod it ive just checked the cams and chain tensioner, all cams ect are fine, but the chain tensioner i pulled out and let it extend fully the replaced and it pushes on the chain a little but it does not push it back any notches so i think maybe the tensioner or chain i needs replacing, also could this have caused the chain to jump a tooth if so how do i set the timing back correctly thanks guys.

in the doc fella

get the ignition mark in line with the top screw hole and the cam lobes should be absolutely symetrical.

Hi mate could do with a little bit more help the doc didnt help me a lot, ive checked the timing with the cam lobes at 11 and 1 oclock, and the two engraved lines for the timing, the first line was slightly before the the white marking line and the secong engraved line was further away to the left, this is with the cam lobes at the correct angle. has the chain jump a tooth thanks james.

you're not listening son!

you need the right of the two IGNITION timing marks in line with the two screw holes. then check. put the tensioner in as well or stick a little rod in the back to give it some tension if you like.

and never insult the doc.

"you're on thin ice my pedigree chum!"

PS name the film and I might even help you some more....

is the film snatch, i wasnt insulting the doc i just need things in really plain english or pictures sometimes not the best person for understanding written instructions.

i put the bits in i bought off you good replacement blade by the way fits realy snug but still knocking, but where are these screw holes that need lining up with the right ignition mark. sorry about all this but i am really stuck, the bike does kick over first or second time everytime, the knocking is not there at first when cold but as soon as i give it a few revs it comes back.

'I'm already sweet enough as it is turkish!'

the screw hole is at the top. you need, strictly speaking, to get a fresh line marked as the factory got it wrong.

so as the white line comes up to the screw hole and is in a line from threw hole to the centre of the crank....that is TDC!

now i can't make it any simpler than that!

cheers matey ill get on to it, the bad thing is i was looking threw all posts found one you posted with a video "whats this noise", and that sounds like my bike only mines not as bad yet lol. might be needing some more parts soon lol.

hey matey, done the timing. but decided to take the head off to check the piston and vavles. put it to tdc and made a new scribed mark. noticed one thing though because i had to take the clutch assembly out to put the kickstart spring back in lol. even with the new cam chain, tensioner and blade the chain was still being pressed against the inner casing near the coolent let through bit. so i tapped the cam wheel upwards and it tensioned the chain. it seems there is a little play in the bearings that are on the cams. and the back bearing looks like its been pressing upwards into its seating with some score marks ect. dont suppose you could send me a pm with price on the bearings.

cheers james.
