Hi Ladies and Gents

new to the forum and to husabergs ... thrown myself in at the deepend and bought a 2002 fs650e ... should have done my homework and looked for an 04 but here we are.

im looking for advice on how to live with the bike as im allready getting pretty tired of the thing, i have finally got the hang of starting the bike but it doesnt seem to want to stay running, its done 750 miles since new (aparently... speedo cable is missing ...) had new oil and filter by the previous owner just before i bought it and has been stood un used for the last 3 years to his knowledge.

i got the bike going and noticed a light brown fluid coming out of the cable entry into the stator housing ... it smelt fuely but was just watery and looked like it had been there a while, the stator bell looked shagged as the water had obviously taken its toll as the nut is rusted and minging ... gonna be fun to remove!!

also the engine is getting noisy when it runs ... seems knocky and whiney, i know these engines whine and im aware some engines are inherently knocky (i own a mille and its a noisy mare) so just a bit of reasurance would be ace.

ive been told about dave clarke racing and how they do an engine rebuild that replaces and upgrades standard bearings that are weak points and ive also found taffmeisters who offer alot of nice looking kit that promises to make the bike more reliable.

sorry ... i know these questions have probably been asked a million and one times before but i like to read fresh answers from the people that know the bikes

thanks in advance!!

Rob

Hi mate,
Whereabouts are you in the world?
My bike isnt happy to tick over, just needs the odd throttle blip to keep it going.

Engine shouldnt be knocky, loud maybe but no actual metallic banging.

Can highly reccommend clarkey, had mine rebuilt there last year an its a different bike

im from middlewich in cheshire ... lovely place ... :|

its not so much a banging more of a gentle tapping sounding maybe like the valve clearence is off a little ... will have to have a scout at that when i get the spanners out.

i just managed to take it out for a blat and its acting like its restricted, when you go anything over 1/4 throttle it chokes up and splutters with hardly any power, could this be a dirty carb?? i stopped the bike and tried restating it ... after a fair bit of swearing and a little pop back through the carb it fired up and ran sweet with loads of torque untill it started spluttering again ... to me it sounds like crap in the fuel so its a carb strip down me thinks

Hi and welcome

Don't worry about asking what has been asked before, there isn't much new questions to this bikes here, so if no one repeated them it wasen't fun :D

So, that thing coming out of your stator cover its probably water thats been there for a while, its hapens when you wash the bike and it stays there. Some people like to do a small hole in the bottom of the casing to drain it, I like to open and clean each time I ride, or at least each time I wash it. If its not rusty water and its oil, its the seal that's in the back of the flywheel, but probably its just water.

The bad new is that it doesn't give much health to your stator and it will die eventualy, well they all die eventualy

You have here in the owners docs the values for you to check if its ok.

When it goes, your best solution is to rewind it. You have here two members that will do it, Sparks (the first) and Kris650 (the new one). Kris also will give you a nice gasket for that cover, for me its the best solution, I've used o-ring and silicone, but I like this one better.

If you need something don't hesitate to post

Hey Rob,

i did the same as you a couple of years ago and jumped straight in without doing my homework. After working my way through the tips in the owners docs i had an 02 650 that would start on the button from cold.

The things that made big differences for mine were;

getting the valve clearances right
ignition timing
rewound stator.........details on how to test yours in the Docs.
refurbed the carb, certain jets, the needle and emulsion tubes replaced
and a newer auto de-comp (dutch clog) fitted when i put a new camchain in.
R6 starter motor.
Loads of trawling the docs and phone calls to DCR and Gary Grover Racing in Newbury

Hope this helps

Carl

if i can help just ask here fella!

everything that needs saying has been.
