I am a new member to the site and I have been doing some research on getting a Berg. I really like the newer fe550. I have found a 96 fe501 at a good price so I thought I might buy it and see how that goes and possibly upgrade to a newer model down the road. Is there anything I should know or look for on this bike. I have read that reliability might be a concern on the older bikes but I am not sure if it is that big of an issue on this model. I was wondering if anyone has or has had this bike and their experiences. I was also wondering what would be considered a good price, I can pick it up for $1500 which sounds very fair to me if it is in good condition as indicated.

imo, reliability is what you make it. if it is maintained as it is supposed to be, and it hasn't been "rid hard and put away wet", its still what it is: an 11 yr old race bike. to be a reliable starter, and a bike that gets you home happy, all the worn out parts will need attention. and in 11 yrs, they can be worn out. otoh, it could have been well cared for. but you're gonna have to know its history. good luck with it. the price sounds reasonable for a bike in fair shape.
