Hey Guys (and Gals, if present), my name is Eric. I am new to the Husaberg bikes scene as of this last September. I bought 2000 FC501 from my boss that had 6-8 total hours on it (he bought it from the dealer in 02 or 03 and just never used it, partially because the bike was a little extreme for his style of riding)
I love the bike, it has tons of incredible power. It kicks butt on my pal's brand new 06 kx450f, but here is my dillema. Since I have been reading around on this site it seems as if these things have the nasty tendency to go kaboom, either a bearing going out, or a nut that has been torqued improperly from the factory. Naturally I would like to avoid such a failure, so what should I tear down and re-torque, loctite or replace? Or is it just too much of a timebomb that I should just sell and get somthing different? I have been working on bikes for some time, and consider myself to be a fairly competent mechanic (I also recognize when I need to let someone else do the work). Anyway, I would really like to do what I can to keep the bike in good working order because I really can't afford to replace an engine right now.... So any tips on how I can do that would be greatly appreciated. Oh, by the way, the bike now has about 20 hours on it and runs like a champ.
Thanks,
-Eric

the best advice is to use the very best oil , synthetic .

change the oil all the time and keep an eye on the magnetic drain plug . this can be the 1st indication that things are not good .

The magnetic drain plug didn't come around till 2004.

2000fc501rider,
Keep in mind many people come to this site when they have problems and questions on how to fix things rather than stopping by to say, "wow, my bike is perfect" or "went for a ride today, what an awesome bike". That's why the bad stories tend to outweigh the good.

You've got yourself an excellent generation of both bike and motor so don't be paranoid about it going kaboom! As stated, keeping the oil fresh is very important with these motors. Learn how to adjust the valve lash and keep your eye on that. Also, after washing the bike or after a ride in the wet, pull the three screws and open the flywheel cover to let the stator dry off. Every now and then, pull the stator out of the cover and clean any corrosion on the pickups. Also, get in the habit of pulling the air filter and looking for oil or water in the carb. boot and just wipe it with a clean rag.

Enjoy your awesome bike, it is not a time bomb.

Welcome to the site Eric!

Hey thanks for the advice. After reading about some of the problems that people have had I was getting a little worried. I will for sure keep fresh quality oil in the machine. Before I got this bike I had never been on a bike that had so much smooth power. Most of the bigger bikes I had ridden prior were 400cc two-strokes. Husabergs are really sweet machines!
Thanks again

some would say you have got yourself one of the most coveted years and displacements, in the small circle of people who know anything about the brand anyway. Ride it until you have an issue, read the "DOC" and it will give you a good idea of what things to look out for. You have an awesome bike and a site here with more combined technical knowledge than just about any other site out there, and the people are here and willing to help.

welcome to the fold...

:D Welcome to the fold. I own a 96 501 and the trick is to keep up with maintenance. Change the oil when needed, adjust the valves etc. Read the Doc. and if you still have questions post here, somebody will reply. Good luck and ride.

Eric

read more carefully and you'll note that the loose nut is a 2004 problem and the bearings were a 2004/5 issue.

panic when we tell ya something was shyet in Y2K. then and only then.

you could be waiting quite a while.....

fc501

cool i have a 2000 fc501 as well!
it has just one major flaw...........
it wears it's poor owner out too quickly!

I've found one particular flaw with my FE550 '05.... it wars out rear tyres in no time.. 4 months tops!!!

But it is fun getting there.... enjoy the berg!

Yeah Awisksch I noticed that too. After the two good long days of riding I got in and misc shorter rides the stock rear tire is looking pretty sad. It had practically no wear when I got it. Knobs torn off from the rocks and total tread worn to about 50%. I was kinda figuring I should buy up stock in Dunlop or Maxxis with this type of tire devouring machine around!

Its all fun.

Yep,
Im running a Kenda Millville on the 550 at the moment, and its wearing pretty well all up, next hoop though will be either Michelin Desert, or Maxxis Desert or Maxxis MT.

I really liked the MT's when I had them on my KX125.

azza.

Logjump is right about what this site is about. One guy on TT posted that he saw a lot of Bergs exploding for that reason.

2000FC501Rider, I wanted to say Welcome!, and add my couple of cents worth. I owned a 2000 FE501, put a zillion miles on it, loved it! I bought a 2006 FE450 and sold my 2000. In all the time and miles on the 2000, I had one mechanical gremlin I'll tell you about. The rocker arm rollers for that year were not heat treated properly. The little tiny needles will wear the center axle shaft, causing valve clearances to grow alarmingly. Not to worry too much, you will hear the clatter, and have some time to get her home. These roller bearings are easy to replace, and from what I have heard, the replacement ones are heat treated correctly. Run synthetic oil, change it at approx 100 mile intervals, and check those valves every few oil changes till you are really familiar with how it sounds and feels. You have one of the best of the best, enjoy!
