Actually posting for my Brother that doesnt have internet access... He recently purchased a 2001 FX470E from a guy in Northern Utah... whom y'all should stay away from... But thats neither here nor there.

He was told when he bought it that the timing chain had been replaced, and "everything else looked great" inside the engine. He got it home and pulled the engine side cover to inspect things and do an oil change. Found some yucky lookin chunks and what looks like a pin from a roller bearing. He's pulled the clutch and the rocker cover and cant see anything wrong. It apparently does seem to burn a *little* bit of oil, but otherwise runs great, tons of power. It also seems to have a weak starter- he thinks there may be something wrong with the clutch. Is there anything in the starter clutch that could have chunked? Where else could these bits be coming from?

Was the timing chain replaced because it broke? May be chain fragments.
The 01's had a really bad starter sprag setup. The starter should be used for hot restarts only and everything has to be spot on as well for it to work. Timing, idle, jetting and valve adjustment has to be right. The stator has to be healthy as well.

You will need to spend some time reading "the owners doc". Here is the link.

The pin looks like it could be from one of the cam follower bearings, had one go on mine recently, hard to judge the scale in the picture but they are roughly a few mm in diameter and approx 10mm long. Could be worth taking the rocker cover off just to be safe and check alls well up there.

He already pulled the rocker, and he said everything up there looked great. I think the cam chain must have broke on the P.O. and these are chunks left over from that.
