Hello, my name is mike and i bought a 96 501 last week, kind of a rolling basket case but it is all there except for a radiator.I got a really nice one for about half of what i thought it was worth. Cleaned the carb, checked the valves, had a hell of a time getting it started until i realize my buddies gas can was mis-marked....4 strokes don't run well on 30:1. Got it running well enough for a putt down the street tonight, still needs some tinkering and cosmetics but it seems run plenty solid.
This is a really good website for information, you have been a lot of help...very little info any place else....some odd ways of doing things on this bike...The air box...lol...fuel tank is as strange as i have ever seen, brakes are like i expected, i used to have a ducati with brembos. Haven't had a dirt bike in 4-5 years when i sold my 84 495 KTM that i bought in 86,rode it for 8 years, sold it to a buddy, bought it back 4 years later, sold it again, bought it back again, rode it fo several more years....when i sold it the last time it had never even had the head off...original motoplate, i did brakes once, my buddy did fork seals once, tires/chains/sprockets/bean oil and av gas....Started 2nd kick every time...Got to love them left kickers..lol

I guess the 501 has a lighting coil? It's an fc. What's the hot tip for a high output headlight? I will probably be doing a lot of night ridding. I live in lake havasu...120*+ in summer. Looking for a rear fender with a light....something seems off with the rear sub frame. It's not supposed to look like this is it?

the picture of the rear subframe you showed is an aftermarket product i beleive made by malcom smith, it is aluminum, the stock one is chrome moly like the rest of the frame, also the pic that you provided of the aluminim one is missing the rearmost "hoop" so basiaclly it is not 100% complete. i have one of the aluminum ones on my bike and got it from a guy that used to work for malcom smith and i think it was a leftover or something. it saves a couple lbs, nothing to special my original was very slightly bent thats the only reason i got the aluminum one, it was cheap and available for me at the time....it also was complete, not sure that you could transfer the hoop from the original to the aluminum one, my original one was welded on and wouldnt be an easy trasnfer, surely possible tho.

congrats on you new bike and welcome to the site

the subframes as far as i knew where all the same up to 96 but i could be wrong, thats just me thinking so i porobably am wrong :D i also know that there is a difference in the way the the plastic mounted between 97 and 98. the subframe that aluminum subfram pic you showed will fit 97 or 98 as they made a provision for how the plastics mounted so it will accept either one. maybe the difference in the up to 96 could be e-start or no e-start? and/or lights/ no lights?
