New member and soon to be 'berg rider

I just thought I'd introduce myself. Up until now I've been been a committed KTMophile, and while I'm still pretty high on their stuff, I'm going to try a Husaberg. I plan to pick up a new '05 FE450 next week in Lubbock.

I've been riding a KTM/HT racing 351exc. I love the motor, and have really grown to appreciate the way shorter stroke motors make power. When deciding that it was time to get a new bike, I had all but decided upon a 400exc, but when discovering that the Husey 450 is actually shorter stroke than the Katoom, I started reading and investigating.

I'm excited about it. Now if that "Boss" guy would answer my email and tell me how to get one of those cool white space-age skidplates I'll be happy. Also, I noticed a picture or two of bikes with aluminum handguards that had Husaberg plastic deflectors.... I don't suppose anyone can lead me in the right direction with those?

The Husabergs are alot like your previous KTM bike but better in every way! Not being bias here just telling it how it is....
(I enjoy joking around and making myself laugh, sad really)

Since KTM moved the Husaberg production over to Austria things have gotten allot better for the blue and yellow machines and buying an '05 bike should give you many years of enjoyable riding.

BOSS does sell his skid plates and should get back to you shortly on how you can pick one up. He is a busy man and might be away on business right now but be patient and he will respond.

I have a set of $40 Moose aluminum handguards on my '02 FC550 and was able to screw the OEM handguards right onto the Aluminum guards by drilling a small pilot hole into the aluminum and using two small self tapping screws for each plastic brush deflector. Work quite well and still looks great. All the other aftermarket handguards in "Blue" and "Yellow" do not match up and I wanted to coordinate the colors, that is why I chose doing it this way. Here is a link to a pic in my gallery with the talked about retrofit. I just cut the two OEM mounting tabs off but not completely as they will help you to keep the brush deflector centered nicely.

Spend some time reading through the forums to get yourself aquainted with the bike and post any questions that you might have. Also, there is a link on the left side of the screen named "The Doc". Taffy has spent countless hours over the past few years answering many questions and discussing allot of info for Husaberg owners.

The FE450e bore x stroke ratio is a whopping 1.79. #2 is the TE-450 at 1.56. the FE450e is very linear power and no hit until 15-20 hours of break in then the bottom end had a nice lurch of power right off the throttle. very little allmost no engine breaking.

4 distinctive things:

1.) in short the Berg 450 is short stroke heaven.
2.) Its has a very fast longwinded wide ratio tranny.
3.) LIGHTEST E start 450 on the planet
4.) the berg riding position and its over all Berg feeling is special.

Also being a hardcore ktm 200, 300, guy my research for alternatives lead to the same decision you have made. The 05 fe 450 over the 400 exc was a difficult choice especially with (jealous) riding buddies trying to persuade astray. The short stroke helps with the stalling concern on severe trails but still had to gear down (13)and may go more in the rear. Just typical fine tuning for terrain. My other concern was whether or not there would be an overheating issue so went for the 06 tank. I cannot give full newbie ride report with so few hours on the bike especially on trails but should be more than pleased when I learn how it wants to be ridden .My dealer set up the jetting and so far seems to be ok. If you need the new sizes I can let you know. Congrats--

Boss is currently at the Dirt Rider 24 hour test where he is busy keeping things running smoothly as Jimmy Lewis and crew evaluate the 2006 FE550.

Thanks for the welcome and all the information! And don't worry, part of my research involved this web site, so I had ample opportunity to admonish myself with regard to checking Taffy's doc. before asking redundant questions.

I'm pretty confident that I'll like this bike. I'm an amateur (meaning enthusiastic but slow and lacking any notable skill) enduro rider, and my trail riding is somewhat spirited trekking through tight stuff, so I really think the short stroke motor combined with the handling, weight, ergos, etc. is going to be just right for me.

Bottom line: I've liked my KTM's so much that I wanted to get the best KTM they make.

That 450 you are buying kept my 550 company on the showroom floor until about 2 months ago when I bought it. Cycle Shack is a good dealership, and the owner chooses to ride a 'Berg even though he sells mostly KTM's. It is nice to live in the same town as the dealer. Have fun with it.

I just received the 06 tank for my 05. The left side (sitting on bike) has a knob that screws in and out to turn fuel on/off. The right side has a standard fuel petcock with the lever facing inward towards the engine. Seeems like a good plan to prevent the lever from being snagged by something and switched off.

It if nothing else feels hightec to now tuuuurn the petcock as opposed to twisting, but twisting eliminates the possibility of over turning and likely leakage! We will see. Tell your wanting to ride your bike buddie the gas is already on.

I was told to be very light to the touch while turning that round valve on the left, looks and feels dainty.

Please excuse the double post I think I need to start wearing a helmet!
As far as bike set up goes I still have not had decent enough weather or time to try out new slower throttle cam which hopefully will address the gearing down repercussions.
Hey, Allright I am sucking it up and admitting I am too stupid or hit my head too many times to figure out how to post pics of the 06 petcocks.
I'll keep trying though.
