Hi guys!

I recently aquired a 1997 Fe 501 and am very excited about it.

I'm having troubles starting it but when it does start it runs like nobody's business. I have a few ideas why it might be difficult to start but I wanted to get some other opinions as well. My ideas are not necessarily in order of most probable.

1) I suck at kick starting because I've never had a kick start bike before

2) Needs a new spark plug (I will determine this with a new one tomorrow)

3) Cold weather (it's around 3-5 celcius right now)

4) stator needs to be re-wound (i've read that I should get this done anyway before it goes)

What do you guys think?

Thanks a lot!

Read the DOC

Read the owners doc. It will give you some insight into many things. They can be a bear to start, but try different things, and you may stumble on to a formula that works. For me, I turn on choke, kick it 5 or six times, twist throttle 2 or 3 times while kicking with choke on. Then turn choke off, kick it all the way through real good,a nd on the second kick it will start and idle, even cold. Go figure...it will not start on choke.....

okay i pulled the spark plug today and it was very black so i went out adn picked up a new one along with some sea foam for in the tank. after many many kicks i finally got the bike to start!

it seemed to be running very rich (the black plug was one hint, the blue exhaust another). I let it run for a couple minutes and revved t up a few times. then suddenly the throttle was non-responsive and seemed to almost stall the engine.

do i just need to adjust my fuel mixture screw a bit?

Welcome 237. All as above. Search the doc. Search "hard start" search "Arkley" I had starting probs. Now it's so easy & a pleasure. General guide.

Correct plug
Jetting - see Taffy
Valve set uo - see doc.
Auto de-comp upgrade - doc - taffy.

If you dont want to do all the upgrades then kick technique is crucial in order to get enough engine speed turnover at the right point.
Gently depredd the kick start until you can recognise the stiffest point. That's TDC (top dead centre), move on just past that - really..only just past that...get the lever back up & engaged as high as you can get it (ie no slack) then a single strong firm kick should do it. Dont stamp on it or jump on it...just a real strong continious hard kick to the bottom..If you jump on it, youll probably break the shaft...they have a stupid maching detail which says "snap here". Oh yea..NO THROTTLE. Perhaps one quick flisc prior to kicking.

Good luck

much success today using a steady, long kick as suggested. i adjusted the fuel mixture screw as well as the idle and got it running quite nicely.
