All,

Was checking around the Evans site the other day, as I am getting ready to put their coolant in my 09's.

As I have mentioned before in other threads about their NPG-R, it is not rated for "cold temps" so I inquired about what "cold temps" were. That's when they told me about their new product "Power Sports Coolant" which is a combination of NPG-R and NPG+, both of which are going to be discontinued, and replaced with Power Sports Coolant, and another not on the market yet called HPC.

The Power Sports Coolant is for bikes, and has cold temp protection and operation down to -40F, boil over at 375F, and is a lifetime coolant. What I've always like about it is that your cooling system runs at very low pressures which makes the seals and hoses last a long time. The Power Sports Coolant has all the benefits of NPG+, but the thinner viscosity of NPG-R for our small cooling systems.

You can check it out here: http://www.evanscooling.com/products/co ... s-coolant/ They are still working on their web site for the new products, so some info is not present, but their technical support team gave me the details via email.

I have been using the NPG-R in my 04 and 01 bikes for years now with no issues, even in weather down into the teens. But NPG-R was not recommended for that, so its great they have developed a product for all seasons.

I love Evans coolant. I have used NPG+ with absolutely no negative issues at all. I couldn't use the R because I have to have the low temp performance that the + offers. Good to see that they have refined their product for us specifically. I will be trying it out soon. Thanks for the info.

Hi DaleEO and Jonhf3,

I have just installed the Evans NPG+ on my FE570 2011.

On the first day riding it I had a lot of steam coming out from the radiators and hoses, which I think it is normal for the first day, right.
Next day almost no steam at all.

But the oil level window has a crack now, leaking oil, and it appear two days after I have installed the Evans.

Now I´m wondering if the reason of the crack window is the higgest temp that the engine is supporting now?

Do you think the cracked window can have anything to do with running with Evans?

Thanks.

Carlos.

I've run NPG+ in my 2002 FC550 with great success... I know, it's a bit "thick" in comparison to the NP-R, but I wanted the freeze protection here in Canada.

On another application, I just put 8 gallons of NPG+ in my Ford Diesel truck... that was an expensive refill! But worth every penny.

Adding products like Engine Ice and Evans does nothing to lower the teh operating temperature of the engine.
They just don't boil out of the rads as quick as 50/50 antifreeze.

Not boiling over when overheated could mean you've ran the engine at dangerously high temperatures.

The only way to keep them cool is by moving air through the rads.

Ummmm, no and no.

I am curious as to why you would use the NPG+ when the new product I mentioned is specifically designed for bikes. The NPGR is what I have always run in my older bikes and am getting ready to switch over to the one mentioned in the first post of this thread.

You should have no "steam" of any kind after the NPG install, as all water would have been removed from the system. I think there is another issue.................

Just a point of clarification...........Engine Ice has water in it, and it will boil over, and it doesn't work as good as regular Prestone. In fact, engine ice boils quicker than prestone-experience.

Evans, you're right it doesn't boil over, and the engine will run slightly warmer, however, Evans stays in contact with the metal surfaces much better than water/antifreeze, and since it doesn't boil over, will stay in the cooling system as opposed to ending up on the ground.

Hi DaleEO,

You don´t think the reason of the cracked oil window is the Evans?

Do you know anybody else with a cracked oil window?

I have just ordered a new window and wondering if it is going to happend again...

I have the NPG+ because it is the only one available in Spain, I can order the NPG-R to Belgium or UK but the shipping cost are expensive and I need below 0º C protection, which I think the NPG-R does not have.

About the steam coming out from the bike, it happened only the first day, then not stam at all.

I have read in someplace that the steam on the first day is normal if not using the Prep fluid, because some water drops left.

I didn´t use the prep fluid because not available in Spain.
I removed the radiators and hoses, cleaned them and dried them very well, installed them back, filled up with 0.6 liters of Evans, started the engine at idle for 2 min, drained again the system. Filled up totally, 1 liter, with brand new Evans.

Well, you prepped the cooling system well.

No, I don't see how the sight glass got cracked b/c of the Evans unless there is a lot more to this story than what you have said. Was there something extreme going on?

The only thing I would add about the Evans is that when you first put it in after the flush, you fill to manual specs, and then let it run and get hot with the cap off, then cap it and shut it off. The steam you mentioned may have been from overfilling the cooling system to the point that when the bike got hot and the coolant expanded it pushed its way past the cap and found its level.

What do you think?

Nothing extreme happened, only what I have said.
I have been riding the bike always in a normal way.
Sometimes overboiled in a slow trial section, that is way I decided to put Evans coolant.
After 2 or 3 days riding with the Evans, I discovered the oil window cracked, that is why I was wondering if the crack could happend because the Evans.
Never had anything hitting in that place, at least that I know. But i think it is a well protected place, not easy to hit the window with a rock or anything similar.

About let it run and get hot with the cap off, you are right, I forgot to do it, I just filled up to manual specs and rode the bike. Just after 10 min ride, a checked the level and was ok, but maybe I had overfilled it.
But as I said before, no more steam anymore....!

DaleEO,

What level of coolant do you put with the Evans?

I have to let the level a bit lower than the manual says, otherwise overflows.

As I said, I´m running the NPG+, wich I think it has more density compared to the NPGR.
The NPGR maybe can be at a higher level compared to the NPG+.

Really? I put mine at 10mm's above the top of the coolant tubes and don't have a problem.

You are using the NPGR, right?

Have you ever used the NPG+?

Before I bought the NPG+, I asked a few questions to the main Evans dealer in USA, and a technitian told me that for an engine with small radiators, like an Enduro bike, it is better to use the NPGR in stead of the NPG+, due to the difference on the density, better for the small tubes of this type of radiators.

That is true, the NPGR has viscosity modifiers in it that adapt it to the smaller tubes of a motorcycle.
