Hi guys. I'm heading over today to possibly pick up this guy here:

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/mcy/884022442.html

I'm coming from a XR650R which I sold about a week ago. The 40lbs weight loss is a big factor as I'm a smaller guy (170lbs / 77kilos) and do both wide open desert and lots of tight rocky trails out here in the Nevada desert.

Couple questions. I've found the Clarke tank which should suit me farely well but where do I get the 2005 kickstarter that it says you have to have with it?

Any good online parts places for us?

What do you guys think about this bike on CL I'm checking out? Thoughts.

Ah one more thing, I'm a fairly decent bike mechanic. At least to the point of valve checks, piston/rings replacement stuff like that is no problem for me.
The guy selling here said that when cold you have to start with the kickstart and then the E-start is for when warm.

Is this normal or something that could be corrected with proper jetting and maintenance?

There is a lot "of poetic license" in that ad, to be honest. 65 mpg?

For the price he is asking, I'd find an '04 and up Husaberg myself, just for the Kokusan ignition and the Keihn carb.

Oh yeah, I know some of it is inflated and thats cool. I'm not even paying just trading a quad for it...going off of KBB its a dead even trade I think $75 difference. I dont use the quad and he doesnt use the berg (got himself a XR650r) so I'm thinking about it.

Any issues known for this year/model?

What carb is on the 03?

you don't have to get the later kickstarter if you're not the anal type. the stock one works fine, it just rests on the tank a bit.

Book to book trade is the way to go, so I'd say you are good there.

The 2003 has a Dellorto carb.

I know nothing about pre 2004 Husabergs, but there are many here that do. The Owner's Doc here on this site is also a great place for information on known issues, etc.

Are his hp numbers actually correct? 62hp in stock form?
Thats amazing, considering all the uncorking and tinkering I had to get the Xr close to that.

Really looking forward to the test ride this afternoon.

Any input on the starting issues?

HP-62? maybe at the crank, but I think the 650's are closer to mid 50's stock at the wheel. Still very powerful though.

The whole e start system was upgraded in 2004. A more robust battery (ytz7s) along with the upgraded Kokusan ignition and Keihn carb made life easier when it comes to starting these motorcycles, kick or e start. The better battery would be a drop in for your '03.

Talk to member Sparks here on this site--his SEM ignition upgrades (for '03 and down) get rave reviews. The Dellorto can be set up better to aid starting also.

What options are there for upgrading the ignition and carb?

The Sparks upgrades are stator only or does he do full ignition and all?

Many have said that with a new battery and a newly wound sparks SEM and you are golden... still the bike was designed to have a restart button not an e-start-

I think the kickstarter you want for the clarke tank is an 06-08.

The bike has 05 graphics. The photos are not real clear. I wonder if it may be an 05.

what forks are on that thing?

Good catch, and I have no idea. Maybe some 50mm WP conventionals?

Looks like a supermoto front fender too.

Definitely '05 graphics, but the stock rear fender/side plates on the '05 were blue, not yellow.

Time to go back to the seller and ask a few more questions, like where are the stock forks and front wheel?

Hmmm thats a lot of info he left out.

I've had my lemons in the past and although I dont mind a high maintenance schedule I'm not keen on picking up a bad bike.

Think I'll pass on this one and try for a 05 or newer.

Thanks much for the info guys.

Owner says it was born a FS400E and converted by the dealer to a FE650E down in Mexico while still new.

He says they are 50mm front forks on there also done by the dealer.

..this a normal thing with Bergs?

I would stay away from this one. to many "things" he failed to tell you upfront. a bike from mexico that was stripped and converetd from an 400 to a 650? what year is the motor they put in it? wlak away man walk away....,

Dude, how many red flags need to be waving for ya? I called bs as soon as I read the ad.

You said you were trading a four wheeler for it.
Unless your quad was repaired and retrofitted at some point in Mexico, I wouldn't trade it.

I think it's great that you are wanting to upgrade to a Husaberg, but this one ain't the one to cut your teeth on.

Yeah I called and cancelled as soon as you guys identified the mismatched forks.

Have done a ton of Berg research though and am damned determined to get one. I had no idea how bad *** these bikes are. Sounds like a perfect swap from my XR650R with me being a light weight guy.

E-start, 6 speed, same weight as a WR/KLX/CRFX....amazing.
I'm hooked now just need to find a nice used 05-07 FE650.
Thanks guys.
