Hi guys can I get a few tips on ensuring a new 450 2008 gets a good start to life. I am asking these questions before I have a good look at the bike on the weekend. Reading the manuals, owner's doc, and watched the maintenance vidoes that applied to earlier models.

1. with the valve adjustment. The owners doc says you can use a special bolt to lock the crank at top dead centre. Is this on the 08 models and what is the thread of the bolt, that is can any right thredded bolt be used or must the special part bolt be used?

2. I presume that it is top dead centre reached after the intake valves close for valve clearance?

3. The manual says front fork sag is hard to say (as I suppose all are different). What though is the most common fork unloaded sag. As new it is around 40mm and this seems a bit much?

4. Not that I should need to for a while, but what is the easiest way to get the battery out to replace? I have heard if done the wrong way it can be a messy job?

5. Are you guys happy with moterex oil or does some one know another favourite. Does anyone know what guys who do the six day use?

6. the stories of the main bearing failure are scary, How can I recognise this happening before it does....or does it just happen. If I take the ignition cover off, can I check the float of the main and how much should it be?

7. sorry lots of questions, but hopefully all good ones. Any other warning or things that should be watched for.

hope to hear and I note some really good info on the site. Really surprised the bike did not come with a WP manual, they did in the past though. Does anyone know if ktm guys get more info in their kit?

1) don't worry about using the stop bolt (an 8x1.25x about 40 with the tip ground to a point). helps on a ktm, but on a berg its so east to just mark the flywheel.
2) yes
3) see the doc
4) pull the starter, pull the box
5 )doesn't matter
6) ya, and you could be struck by lightning, hit by a bus, etc. geez. "don't worry, be happy"
7) watch out for people trying to steal your bike, dog, wife, gun, etc. its a dangerous world out there.

just my thoughts:

4)(the bike on a stand) Remove the upper screw of the shock, then remove battery
5) change, change, change oil - as often as possible (brand doesn´t matter)
7) Fork takes about 20-30 hours until it´s broken in, engine takes even longer until it starts´to feel "free" . Get a factory fan with an additional off switch. Go for a leaner jetting.

Have fun
