I have decided to do a bit of maint on the little berg. This mainly came about when i noticed the head bearings were shot.

I have pulled the carb of to see if i can fix its nasty problem of low bog, popping and farting and being very hesitent and basically unrideable at or around the 1/4 throttle.
I had tried several things to solve some of these issues, i sealed the pipe to stop the after firing, i leaned out the idle mixture screw to help the transition from 1/4 onwards, and hopefully the bog. The popping never stopped, and i wound the idle mixture to less than 2 turn out. This improved it a little.

Now i have just pulled the carb down and found all the jets are standard for an aus 450, with the following

an obdvr needle
178 main
40 idle
200 maj
100 iaj
85 start

The problem i that i have come acros is the needle. When the screw plug is done up and tight, the needle is able to float up and down about 3mm with no resistance. To me this does not seem right, this would allow the mixture to vary at all throttle settings and hence and therefor most of my problems

Is this normal or am i right in saying it is missing something that will stop this freeplay.....

In the parts section and the repair manual it shows what appears to be a spring and washer that sits on top of the clip between it and the screw that holds it in the slide.

Any of the gurus know any more about this would be great............

THANKS :? :? :?

the needle should not float as you describe .

part no 573 31 032 000 is that correct ?

Hi Whosahberg,

Me and Taffy have been conversing by PM over the last few weeks regarding jetting of the FCR carb.
I did obtain a kit from Dale but I found it well rich on the pilot and the needle was a bit harsh became rapidly to rich, but it seems to work well for some people, but one thing Dale is wright about is that the AP in not needed just wastes fuel and your money.
After buying a FE550 2004 I noticed that the standard jetting was grossly over jetted and after chatting with Taffy about needles he recommended trying the DMS needle.
Mine initially had the DVR but this was to lean from 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, so my jetting spec now is,

MJ 150 from dales kit
PJ 40 Taffy says try even lower 38 35
PMS 1 1/2 turns out
PAJ mine is adjustable from dales kit just over 1/2 turn but fixed size around #65
Needle DMS clip #4 from the top.
No AP connected.

The engine starts well hot or cold, the throttle pick up is instantaneous idles perfect, no bogging or hesitation in any gear and pulls hard all through the rev range.

any carb problems at 1/4 throttle is by rule of thumd the slide or needle. both can be assisted by clip position. once you get the needle secured properly try moving clip 1up/1down and you will feel the differences with out needing a dyno! but think all problem will disappear when you fit the missing bit!

1/4 throttle hmm, I would say pilot and slide possibly a small amount of needle depending on needle diameter and taper, this where you start to get the transition between different circuits.

Exactly, just after transition from pilot as fuel is trying to flow with venturi effect. I know Amal have a good line in slides but not sure on availability for dell orto... therefore less likely someone has been playing with slide taper!!! so technically we agree in essence!

Disconnected, I think it was a mere gimmickry thing, it can cause problems especially at low rpm with large throttle opening, big stress on bottom end.

Just took the bike for a quick ride after finally getting it back together,I ended up doing all the bearings and the fork oils while i had it apart so i took a bit longer than i had thought.

All I can say is :D :eep:  This thing has never been like this. it now responds to the throttle, cruises without the annoying twitches and the annoying pops and farts have all but gone. A liitle fine tuning it I should get rid of them all together.

It is amazing how much of a difference it makes when the needle is actually tight in the slide, and cant float around.

Now i can look at going for a ride,,,, after i come back from yet another trip with work, BUGGER
