I know, I know... you get what you pay for... but dang the the yuasa ytz7s is expensive! Should I just bite the bullet and get another one or is there anything cheaper that works?

i'm in the middle of playing around with batteries on my 650. i put a new ytz7s in it last year and it was good for about 6 or 7 months when it started being unreliable. i was blaming everything but the battery because it was so erratic. it was vibration, pure and simple. i took out my counterbalancer and didn't rebalance the crank (big mistake). shakes like a blender. (the c/b is going back in this summer). after making sure the bat was substandard, i bought a cheapie wps ctz7s and tried it, since i had one in my 450 for over 2 years with no probs. worked great for about 2 months before going the way of the ytz7s.
so i pulled the bat box, drilled the welds so i could take it apart and rebent it so its about an inch wider (had to **** the rear a bit to clear the roller gusset), and packed a bunch of padding around the new bat before putting it in. works great so far, but we shall see down the road.
i would have remounted it under the seat if i didn't have an aux fuel tank there already.
by the way, yuasa makes a house brand ytz7s called motocross that sell for about 2/3 the yuasa. i just put one in my 501.

Thanks ned. A quick search for yuasa motocross turned up a bunch of different models. Which one did you get?

Thanks again,

Mike

I bought a Scorpion battery for $47 shipped to my door from batterystuff.com. I've only had it for a couple of months but no problems so far. Cheeseberger recommended it as he's had good luck with them. They also sell the Yuasa Motocross brand for $84.

Check them out.

I have had bad luck with the Yuasa YTZ7S. Way to expensive. I did buy the Scorpion as LOGJUMP says and have been pleased. I actually called the Batterystuff people and asked about warranty, problems, with their batteries, and was told that none had come back. This was 6 months or more ago however. I will be buying 1 very shortly, as the Yuasa hasn't even lasted a year in my 650.

Good Luck

Believe me on this one....

The best battery you can buy at this moment is a Super B. I proved it during the Tuareg rally, Goldenboy can confirm this. It's smaller and lighter then the stock batteries but boy will that thing last..... Great that our bikes have no starting issues....!

@ cheesehead:

which one did you use, the 2300 or the 4600 ?

Was using the 4600. The 2300 is a very small battery for a supermoto. Lots of weight reduction and can start an engine few times.
The 4600 was able to (try to) start my rally bike for more then 5 minutes... Really unbelievable! Yes they are expensive, but that Duracell bunny will loose this one big time!

The owner of BatteryStuff.com(thats me) owns both an 08 and 09 FE 450. These are the shop 'test' bikes. Be aware that while the Scorpion battery is excelent quality, the current run uses a very slightly larger case than the Yuasa/Motocross, and is an extremely tight fit into the battery cage on the 05-08 models.

Good to know! Do I have to modify the cage in any way or just lube up the battery? Have you had any returns or complaints on either Scorpion or the Motocross?

Thanks,

Mike

No complaints with either battery for most applications, except the Scorpion in the Husaberg being a tight fit. A bit of lube and some pressure and it will go in. I personallly have the Motocross in the 08, as it is a better fit until Scorpion goes with the thinner case material this summer.
The Motocross is EXACTLY the same battery as the Yuasa stocker, except for the sticker on the battery. Same factory, same production line, different name, better pricing. I have the luxury of bench testing just about every brand of YTZ7S, and the Yuasa/Motocross is the strongest, closley followed by the Scorpion, and then the rest further down the line.

An interesting comparison in cca and weight would be the YTZ12s vs the Odessy battery for older e-start models.

Sorry for the hijack.

when i put a generic ctz7s in my 650, i had to dremel the inside edges to squeeze it in, and then it only lasted less than 3 months. see my previous thread on this post.

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread but got some battery issues. Having finally got my old 650 starting off the button the first ctz7s only lasted a couple of full day rides before it went open circuit. The supplier replaced it and the second battery has just died after about 5 1/2 days riding (normally trail ride sundays). Both times it went from starting the bike fine to completely dead in minutes, not even enough power to make the horn work! Then wouldn't take any charge.
After the first batt. died i moved it to under the seat to try and lessen the vibes.
As far as i can tell the reg/rect is fine 14-15 dc to an old original battery but only 7 dc to the dead ctz's dropping as the revs rise, does that sound right?

Any ideas out there?
could i have just found a source of duff batteries (doh!)
would vibration kill them that quickly?

Any help greatly appreciated as theres only so many ctz7's in the country for me to destroy!

cheers Carl

the western powersports ctz7s i had in my 650 (with no counterbalancer) lasted about 15 hrs before eating a cell. the dealer replaced it but said that they had a lot of problems with them. i had a similar one in my '04 450 for 2 years. the ytz7s yuasa in the 650 lasted about 6 months

Is the battery in the padded box still holding up okay Ned?
Sounds as if i need to enlarge my underseat box to pad around the next battery if it is.

thanks Carl
