heres the scoop... just bought a 98 fe 400 and the guy clearly wasnt qualified to perform his own work. the wiring is micky moused all over and none of the lighting is opperable but it ran wen he brought it to me. the bike has gobbs of torque and felt like the essentials were in good condition. its not bored out at all and to the best of my knowledge has a wiesco piston. the clutch cable was frayed at the pivot conection so i had a new one fabricated at the local bike shop. after installing it i took it for a spin around the block. just before i got bak to my driveway it just stopped all together. pushed it home and started with the basics.had fuel had air but no spark. now i was well aware that i was going to have to rewire the whole thing anyways but i want to know what to improve and wat to leave alone. ive just about got the bike torn down naked. i want this bike for longevity not for balls to the wall ryding any advise? were do i start?

Greetings and welcome,

Well, first off, do you have any of the manuals?

Dale

unfortunatly no i have been looking for one but i dont really wanna pay for one. suppose i will just have to though

i'm gonna guess that's my old bike that taffy rode at fr2. iirc that'll be its 4th stator that you'll be needing. yes, it has a wiseco piston.
however: the bike has a mikuni carb, and needed jetting for flag when i sold it. ( it should have some spare jets and a spare dellorto carb as well with worn out needle jet). what does the plug ceramic look like? you may just have a fouled plug. i can imagine it would go thru them in flag.

the plug didnt look too bad although i did replace it regaurdless. i do know that it is running a little rich because is sputters just a bit at mid range. i spoke with a bike tech and he recomended looking up factory jet size and installing 3 sizes smaller to reduce amount of fuel and increase air

one of the first things you want to do is pull the mag cover and see if there is any sign of a lot of crud / moisture in there. if its bad, it may mean your stator has a lot of corrosion keeping it from working at full potential. pull the tank and disconnect the wires coming from the mag (don't bother with the yellows). measure the resistance between the wires as per the info in the owner's doc, found at the left side of the page, go to electrical, close to the bottom will be the ohm values for the pre- 99 stator. if you find them bad, just above the value info in the doc is a heading called stator repair. sparks rewinds are the shiznitz.
don't bother with the dellorto, pull the jets from the mikuni, write down the numbers from the main jet, pilot jet, needle and needle jet, and we'll see where we are. i guess i gave away the spare stator a little too early.

ok i havent pulled the flywheel yet but i did pull the cover and it doesnt seem to be to bad in there but i am going to pull it tonight and see 4sho.

ok ive pulled the main jet and if my eyes serve me right its 0.06 mabey and the needle says 6fj40 am i makin sence or do i need to take another look? not very familiar with servicing carbs although i do understand concept and theory quite well if u are williing walk me through it im more than capable

i will post the actual jets tomorrow. i did it right this evening but cant remember all numbers gbut neway do you know stock jetting off the top of your head by chance?

main jet-240 needle-6fj40 needle jet-389 0-2 primary jet-15 secondary jet-0.7 sound acurate?

I dont know how much help you will get here with the Mikuni carb. a DelOrto comes OEM on the bike. and those jets bare no resemblance at all to the DelOrto specs.

WAIT A MINUTE, TAKE A DEEP BREATH !
you've got several threads going about various subjects and its making my vertigo worse.
my understanding is that when yu bought the bike, it started and ran, then after a warmup period, it quit. you need to deal with one problem at a time. to deal with the above problem, all you need to do first is to remove the tank and get resistance values from the wires of the stator (red-green, red-black etc, like it says in the doc). don't take anything else apart until you have those numbers. do not attempt to remove the flywheel with out the proper puller (same puller for old 2 stroke ktm and husky). for the time being, forget the carb (i'll see if i can find some info on what was in it ) and the water pump. if the impeller looks bad to you, replace it with oem.
deal with the stator values first 8)

ok sorry if i overwhelm. just want it back on the road. i will check resistances tonight and post tomorrow. oh and wouldnt think of trying to jimmy that flywheel off buddy im smarter than that...mabey. i was gonna try to rent a puller from flag motorsports otherwise i will just buy it :bounce:
