Hi all,
Not sure if I have a problem but each time I drop the oil out of my 02 fe 501, there is always a few small (less than the size of a pin head) metal flakes in the drain tin when I tip out the old oil. I have recently purchased the bike and done approx. 25 hrs riding since, I have been draining the oil after each ride of approx 4 hrs.
As I am new to Berg ownership I am not sureif this
is this something I should be concerned about or is it common? I usually find a couple on the strainer as well.

Probably an intake roller going bad.

If you dont know when rockers were last replaced, save yourself a world of grief and replace them now.

A well known failure point on the 02 bikes.

my 01 and 02 bikes always had some metal in the oil to one extent or another. You may want to determine if the metal is steel or aluminum. If it is steel, you may have some concern. The cam gear is aluminum in that motor and will shed metal. If the chain is worn it will take some metal off the case.
You may want to update the cam gear, chain and tensioner if the motor has more than 100 hours. There are updated rockers for that motor as well. If the metal is fine steel, it is likely from the rocker bearings.

use a magnet oz to determine what berger mentions. when the camchain gets old it wears away some aluminium in the 'block' area.

i would have a good look at that engine, do some preventative medicine and pay now rather than later.

it's all in the doc.

i reckon:
camchain
camwheel if aluminium ok if steel
new tensioner blade
new rockers complete or do a cheapy and like me just replace the bearings.
modify the tensioner.

regards

Taffy
