gday tim
pretty coarse grained sand up there, get the biggest profile tyre you can with the tallest knobs put 2 rimlocks on and let it right down.
In sand I find the footprint of a tyre (profile and pressure) to be as important as the height of the knobs. a "sand" tyre with small knobs and low profile is worse in sand than a much bigger profile "normal" tyre running low pressure. soft sidewalls also help.
never tried maxis but can say that teraflex 150-90 is a bit of a compromise as its heavy and very stiff sidewalls but for traction and durability its unbeatable 23mm high knobs! brother has one on the hayabusa hill climb bike in my gallery, the dunes that thing goes up are scary. its as good as can be without being a paddle. handling is not so sharp.
motoz recommend tracula for sand, it weighs a kilo less than the teraflex but its smaller and has only 17mm high knobs havent tried it. only other tyre i used what was any good is a michy M12 130-80 the one I got wieghs 5 KG and has 17mm high knobs. good grip to weight ratio but its no teraflex.
I have other thoughts if those ones are no good!
If you meet a guy up there called red tell him to toughen up and get a bike.
regards
Bushie
