Maping Switch ignition/FI

There is only 1 system on the new 2009 ~ 2011 Fuel Injected Bikes. All Engine Management is controlled by the ECU under the Seat. The ECU controls both the Ignition Timing (spark) and the Fuel Delivery Timing/Duration (Injector opening and closing).
There is no external CDI Box or Coil Igniter Box. The Coil is directly fired by the ECU. The coil does not have an ignitor in it either, it is a plain dumb coil.

The only other thing the ECU does is turn the Fuel Pump on when required and flash the FI Light when something is wrong. It is a pretty simple Open Loop Fuel Injection setup.

From what I understand from reading old posts on UHE, the Map Switch changes the Timing Map only.

This is my guess:
1. It ******* the Ignition Timing for the Soft and Standard Maps.
2. When the engine is increasing RPM's, the ECU does not let the Ignition Timing Change or Advance as quick as the Engine requires. This is called “Rate of Attack”.

The ECU has 3 different Maps loaded in it and the Map Switch allows selection of these Maps:
Soft or Beginner or Traction
Standard
Aggressive

The Switch that changes the Maps is connected directly to the ECU.

I am guessing this, a Map in the ECU is just a 2 Dimensional Table, with a “Y” and an “X” Axis.
The “Y” Axis is reading the ECU gets from either the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor) or the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). This indicates Load on the engine. Load being either, the engine laboring up a hill, coasting on a road, or decelerating down a hill.
The “X” Axis is the reading the ECU gets from the CPS (Crank Position Sensor). This indicates Engine Speed or RPM’s.

This is a picture of an example of an Ignition Map in a non Husaberg ECU (Autronic SMC Chev LS1 5.7L). You can see the “Y” Load Axis (The one on the left running up and down) and the “X” RPM Axis (The one up the top running Left to Right). These numbers in the squares are the Ignition Timing settings and these are the settings you would change in an ECU if you wanted to alter the Ignition Timing at any particular place in the Engines RPM range or Load Range. The Husaberg ECU has 3 of these Tables (or Maps as they are called) for Ignition Timing which are selectable by the Map Switch and the Numbers in the squares would have been changed by someone in a Husaberg Lab eating Pizza and drinking too much Coffee.

I am not sure how many Fuel Maps there are in a Husaberg ECU. I am close to finding out. Think another 2 or 3 months. Not many people can read the data in a Husaberg ECU or even understand the Husaberg ECU, that includes me. It is a mysterious little black box. Maybe there are a few but they don't share the info or don't visit UHE.

Good stuff. I am going to take some collage cources and get smarter so I can understand it all.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Yes.

If you search this site you will find some ingenious ways to construct your own, some nice aftermarket options and even ways to turn the switch gear on you handle bars into a map switch.

sweet cheers mate, i did hav a bit of a look at one the someone made themselves (i dont touch electrics, bad things happen :-D) so i may hav to see wot is available. cheers man

70degreeracing makes a nice map switch and also Trailtech makes a nice one too. I personally run the 70 degree switch on my 570 and I like it, can definately tell the difference between the settings :D

can anyone comment on the effectiveness of the map switch on a fe390? I've heard some say it doesn't do much, and others say it really wakes it up??

With the standard exhaust it doesn't do enough to make it worthwile. With a end cap or a more free flowing muffler you will notice a bigger differnce between the maps. Hope this helps.

thanks...I do have the Q4 so maybe it's worth a try.

If you are looking to maximize the effect of mapping changes, you may consider doing the 570 modification with the revised exhaust system. \\
