I'm a new owner of a 2009 FE450 as of last week. I just finished up break-in and I love this bike. This is a new bike for me, though, so I'm still getting to know it.

The dealer installed the EFI map switch and loaded the latest maps before I picked it up. Can anyone tell me which map switch settings do what? It seems that what the dealer told me doesn't quite jive with my seat of the pants analysis. I have the rotary switch with 10 settings, although, I think only 3 are used.

1 = ?
2 = ?
3 = ?

Thanks.

That's what my dealer told me as well. But I would swear that 1 = aggressive, 2= soft, 3-10 = standard. Weird.

Excellent, thanks. That's exactly what the dealer told me, too. Still weird that 1 feels like the most aggressive setting to me, it feels snappier, more responsive, and revs out more quickly. While 2 feels easier to ride and handle. At any rate, either setting is still good, this bike is great!

I went riding today and I usually use the 'traction' map all the time, but I switched to the 'aggressive' map to see if I could live with it on the trail. I went to lift the wheel slightly over a fallen tree and wound up with a 4 foot wheelie instead of a one foot wheelie. So I switched to the 'standard' map and promptly wheelied up a hillclimb that I have done 50 times before, and I dropped the bike on its side.

So 'traction' it is I guess for the trails.

I did ride home on the 'aggressive' map, and I noticed throttle response was more immediate. Not huge amounts of more power, but the bike felt more alive and immediate in its response to any throttle. In short, it was more fun on the street that way and even felt a bit smoother.

Ha Ha, I found the same thing, the long accidental wheelies up hills I do all the time are quite a funny suprise! I didnt think the switch would be as noticeable as it is, and I try to stay away from the agressive setting in the trails till i get used to the bike.

Anyone notice any rise in fuel consumption between 1 Soft and 2 aggressive ??

actually theree is a thread somewhere about this and the general concesus was that soft used the most fuel and aggressive the least.

obviously all depends how hard you twist the throttle

I do remember reading that post. I find it strange that the soft setting would use more fuel though ? I would have thought aggressive (heaping on the power) would be inclined to use more juice ??

I have been told that the main, or maybe sole, difference between the settings is the ignition timing, not the fuel - so if that is true, then more fuel consumption on a ******** setting would make sense.

The only way to know for sure what the differences are would be to look at the maps.

I don't have enough patience to go out and ride the bike on pavement for the miles required on each setting to measure the fuel consumption. For now I will run aggressive on the street to get to the trails then switch to traction mode - which is basically what the switch is for.

copy that codemonkey but I'm even lazier

My map switch will live out its days on aggressive, I've even gone as far as pushing it down past the speedo and headlight mask. I had a vortex on my YZ450f which was on-the-fly switchable, much more "useable"

What I do like about the aggressive setting is the power slides (Yeah baby !!)

On traction, it's way harder to get the rear end to slide out, which is what my riding terrain permits. Once in the high country that traction setting will be switched on and loved :bounce3:

Well, I certainly don't have the skill to ride the bike on trails with the switch on 'aggressive'. Yesterday was proof of that. Indeed, I suck even with it on 'traction', but I don't make as many mistakes. I wish I had the cam on yesterday when I popped the wheelie and then crashed 20 seconds later - but I was just warming up, so I had not turned it on. In the future I will turn it on whenever I am riding a trail.

I could see how a skilled rider would like 'aggressive' - the throttle response is more immediate and you get more power. I like the idea of the switch - it lets people like me learn with a tamer acting engine and then maybe later I will learn enough and get enough experience to where I can dial it up. Also, being able to dial it up on pavement is nice too, not to mention the snowbike conversion where more power will be great.

It would be better if the switch would work on the fly.

I noticed on line that 70 degree racing has a more user friendly switch for on the fly that they are selling online, anyone try thins out yet?

It won't be on the fly - you still have to stop the engine for it to take effect. Yes it will be more convenient because you won't have to stop the bike, take off your gloves, make the change then start again - you can flip the switch, pull in the clutch, hit the kill switch, and once the engine dies then let out the kill switch. Personally I only make the switch when I either hit the trails or leave the trails, both times I stop the bike anyway. YMMV

Any thoughts ??

MX racing - your 570, would you use the aggressive setting or traction setting ?

Well, I wouldn't MX race with a 570, but if I was riding in a race I would use the aggressive setting.
