I have not had my Berg long but I am learning all the time.

Anyhow, I took the right hand frame guard off to replace it with a new set and I noticed that the front sprocket has some side to side play in it and is held in place by a circlip on the splined shaft. Is this meant to be like this (lateral freeplay)? I know that the front sprockets on my sports bikes are on tight with a nut.
I have been searching for an answer on the site but can't nail this one down. I did read about oe and aftermarket sprockets being of different thickness.

It's just a slide fit. They dont need anymore than a slight tap to put them on new. It seems your might be alittle worn.
To answer the question, alittle play is probably fine, but for $20 it's probably worth replacing.

Sorry, what I meant was it has a bit of play on the spline where it slides from side to side. Between the case and the circlip. Thye sprocket slides on perfect with no problems it just seems that it isn't fat enough.

How much play are we talking about here? few thousanths? 1/4 inch? If you think the aftermarket sprocket is too loose then put a washer on after the sprocket and then the circlip. Make sure the circlip is seated properly.

all my dirtbikes have a little play, i dont think you have anything to worry about.

your sprocket should be 12mm wide at the base, the teeth should be central and 4mm wide.

so it goes 4-4-4.

please check it out.
