hi;
i have an 02 fe650e and i'm 95% sure the starter is bad.
before i buy a new, if i can afford it, i was hoping that some one out there in husaberg land would be willing [or stupid enough] to let me borrow one of their extras just to be 100% sure.
any takers?
thanks

I'm sure you knew this was coming, but what checks have you made. Is the resting voltage of the battery 12.5 vdc? Add at least a volt for when your bike is running. Check the terminal connections that there is no corrosion and that everything is tight.

Then check the starter.

Take care tuts

Yo tuts,
What happened to your left leg? I could lend you mine, but I'm kind of attached to it and have no spares at the moment

O.K. now...
What problems are you having exactly, and what checks have you done. The last time I heard your bike run it sounded like the sprag clutch was trying to claw its way out to freedom.

Hi Tuts,

The cable connections to the starter solenoid were both loose on my 04, I found this out on my 4th ride in the desert. It would not actuate the starter, but the lights worked fine. The little rubber boots on the cables kept the screws from falling out. Good thing I had my tool kit with me!

Tuts,

I don't know if it's compaible or not but if it is I'll let you borrow the starter that used to be on my 2000 FE600.

A good check to add to this is to put the black lead of a voltmeter (multimeter set to read volts) on the case of the starter & the red lead on the end of the terminal bolt on the starter. Measure the volts both here and across the battery while it is cranking. If the battery volts remains OK (~>9V) while cranking but the starter volts falls any more than about 1 to 1.5V lower than the battery volts then you can be sure you either have a bad starter lead, lead connetion somewhere, starter earth to the engine (unlikely!) or the starter solenoid has burnt contacts inside. If this is the case you can use the voltmeter to identify exactly which connection or part is crook before you start pulling everything to bits. Post if you want help.

If the starter is crook it is well worth trying to fix the one you have before buying a brand newey. If it spins the engine there is not a huge amount, apart from brushes, that can go wrong inside them. The brushes could get stuck in their cages, in which case a clean out of the insides might be all that is needed. If they are worn out you can often fairly easily file or grind down brushes from many other starters to make them fit for bugger all bucks. I have not done it to a bike starter but I have fixed up outboard starters this way. Perhaps someone else on UHE has fixed a 'berg this way and knows a good way to go?

thanks for the replies.
in a nutshell...the battery is new, the connections are ok and the ground is solid.
i opened the starter up and cleaned it. the brushes seemed fine.
when i jumped the bike with my truck and cranked it, the truck lites went dim. i was assuming excessive draw from the starter.
but no i am remembering that the auto decomp was marginally, and the starter spins the motor ez with the manual decomp used. i'll replace the auto comp assemble with the new 04 units. i think i read they are better.
maybe i'll get lucky.

berger...you are correct as always. my whine is bad on my bike.
i thought it was only a noise and not a problem,,,,am i wrong?
i remember reading that the 2 sprag gears have to match. i am using this link http://www.husaberg.org/modules.php?nam ... ight=sprag to increase my knowledge. gotr more info?

thanks to all.
